The World Doctors Orchestra (WDO) was founded in 2007 and it combines the pleasure related to good music with global social responsibility regarding unlimited access to medical services. Two or three times a year one hundred doctors from nearly fifty countries replace their white gowns with evening outfits and give a concert in favor of the organisation operating in the health services sector and of people who need health care. Revenues from each concert are given to selected non-profit organizations. While their daily work focuses on treating specific patients, as an orchestra they popularize a conviction that neither the state border not political interests should limit access to primary health care. The founder and conductor of the orchestra is Stefan Willich, Prof. PhD.  Doctors from WDO have already played almost 60 concerts in Dubai, USA, Japan, Spain, Cape Town. Poland is the 27th country on their concert tour.

Zakopane | Premiere of the new piece by Marcel Chyrzyński

41

During the final concert of the 41st Karol Szymanowski Music Days, on 29th July 2018 at 8.00 p.m. in the church of the Holy Cross in Zakopane, the premiere of the latest work by Marcel Chyrzyński will take place: Ukiyo-e No. 4 for clarinet, French horn, piano and string orchestra.

The composition will be presented by the Silesian Trio and the Orchestra of Silesian Chamber Musicians under the baton of Robert Kabara. The composer writes about his work:

"Ukiyo-e No. 4 for clarinet, French horn, piano and string orchestra is part of the series of works entitled "Ukiyo-e". This is the fourth composition inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e woodcuts, or "images of the passing world." These woodcuts were the quintessence of everyday life and cultural climate of Japan of the Edo period (XVII-XIX centuries). In this cycle, from the emotional side, I refer to the Japanese aesthetics, in which transitoriness, impermanence, and transience of the moment are of special importance. It includes a Buddhist approach to nature – 'the beauty of flowers is dear to us, because we know that they will not be there again in the autumn'."

In the week preceding the premiere of Ukiyo-e No.4, on 24th July at 6.00 p.m., a meeting with the composer will take place as part of "highlander's residences" in the Wnuk Gallery. Marcel Chyrzyński will talk about his latest work. PWM will broadcast live this meeting on its facebook profile.

The Met: summer repeats | „Turandot” in Polish cinemas

Met

nawyzowkinach.pl – distributor of opera, ballet and theater transmissions and rebroadcasts to cinemas – invites to the Turandot opera show by Giacomo Puccini in the famous staging of Franco Zeffirelli recorded on the stage of The Metropolitan Opera in New York. The monumental performance of Turandot on the grand screen of the Warsaw Cinema Praha can be seen on August 22, 2018 at 6.30 pm.

The Turandot staging prepared for Met by Franco Zeffirelli in 1987 has long been hailed as the showcase of the New York scene. The famous director of this staging also designed a truly fairy-tale set design that continually impresses the audience. The spectacular performance registered in 2016 will be repeated as part of the series "The Met: live in HD".

Puccini's score is full of great hits of opera music; everyone knows the famous Nessun dorma Kalafa's aria. However, the biggest requirements are set by the performer of the title role: Rosa Raisa, who was born as Róża Burchstein in Białystok, after the premiere performance apparently lost her voice. This is not a threat to Nina Stemme, who successfully performs great dramas on the biggest stages of the world. The part of Kalafa will be performed by Marco Berti, Liu will be Anita Hartig, who is in love with her, and Alexander Tsymbalyuk will perform the bass part of Timur. Conducts Paolo Carignani.

Szczecin | MUSIC.DESIGN.FORM – new festival at the crossroads of arts

MDF

What connects avant-garde synth-pop, experimental and minimalist music, as well as beatbox and broadly understood design? The common denominator is the bold project of the Szczecin Philharmonic – MUSIC.DESIGN.FORM Festival. The first edition of the event will take place on September 19-23, 2018 in the award-winning Philharmonic building.

The MDF Festival is an event above divisions, combining various fields of art. During five days the audience will experience, among others: symphonic concerts, chamber concerts, exhibitions, workshops, discussion panels, happenings, as well as light and sound visualizations. The Philharmonic itself will become an artistic object, both inside and outside. On the façade of the building we will see colorful patches, minimalistic mirages or pulsating shapes  the Philharmonic bulding will be light up in this way for the first time. The lobby will be replaced by a mapping presentation of the installation, which in addition to aesthetic experiences will also convey valuable information to the festival guests.

The festival's programme and its range goes far beyond the boundaries set by the philharmonic walls as a standard. Undoubtedly, a big event will be the concert "An Evening of Chamber Music" by Philip Glass. For the needs of the festival, the first sound image of Szczecin will be created as part of the composers' commission. Sounds of Szczecin, which were recorded during a special car action, will become the foundation of the experimental work The Sound of Szczecin, whose authors are composers: Artur Cieślak, Magdalena Cynk, Olga Hans, Aleksandra Garbal, Alicja Gronau, Aleksandra Kościów, Artur Kroschel, Monika Kędziora, Sławomir Zamuszko, and Janusz Stalmierski. An interactive audiovisual installation by panGenerator is also promising. The spiral of the philharmonic staircase will be transformed into a well in which the voices of festival guests will take material and visual shape. The programme will also include workshops for children and adults, as well as lectures and discussions on issues of contemporary design.
