Wrocław | Colours of the flute

Wrocław | Barwy fletuMedia patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

Does the instrument sound different in different instrument configurations? How will a flute playing together with a string quartet sound in a diverse repertoire? How does musical texture affect the perception of its timbre? To answer these questions, on the 14th of March at the National Forum of Music the musicians of the Lutosławski Quartet will join forces with Carlos Bruneel - Belgian flutist whose victory in the prestigious Tenuto competition many years ago gave him a ticket to an international career.

The artists of the Lutosławski Quartet will begin the concert by performing their own version of Witold Lutosławski's String Quartet - his only quartet, which was created as a result of a commission placed by Swedish Radio on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Nutida Musik series of contemporary music concerts.

Orkiestra Akademii NOSPR & Vincent Kozlovsky / Suita tanecznaMedia patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

The new NOSPR organ is the largest such instrument in the region! On the 11th of March, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. it will part of a concert of young musicians of the NOSPR Academy in a piece that would be perfect as the soundtrack to a sci-fi movie or an epic computer game.

Hailed as ecstatic and saturated with contradictions, the Concerto in G minor for organ, timpani and strings is one of Poulenc's most outstanding works. The young musicians of the NOSPR Academy, conducted by Vincent Kozlovsky, will also reach for Béla Bartók's Dance Suite, which already during the composer's lifetime became a symbol of thoroughly modern music and immediately found its way into the repertoire of many orchestras.

Warsaw | Lenten concert "Carmina Dolorosa": premiere performance of work by Katarzyna Brochocka

Carmina Dolorosa - koncert wielkopostnyMedia patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

Lenten concert entitled "Carmina Dolorosa" ("Sorrowful Songs") will feature songs understood literally and symbolically, as an instrumental meditation on the texts.

On the 10th of March, 2024 at 6 p.m., the Church of Creative Communities in Warsaw (Plac Teatralny 18) will host the premiere of Psalms and Songs of the Suffering Servant of Yahweh by Katarzyna Brochocka. Free entrance!

On one hand, Katarzyna Brochocka's compositions allude to the centuries, old history of works of a penitential and ascetic character. On the other hand, they introduce a new quality and a fresh perspective of a young but already recognised composer, living in our times and currently working in Warsaw. Brochocka's works are characterised by an expressive musical language, an extraordinary 'theatricality' of means of expression, which the artist combines with respect for the tradition and forms of previous eras.

The concert will feature two world premieres: Psalm 32 for bass voice and double bass and 'Songs of the Suffering Servant of Yahweh' for piano solo - a cycle of meditations on texts from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Psalms 16 and 131 in a new Latin version will also be heard in public for the first time. The repertoire will also include 'Soliloquia' for solo bass, a kind of 'songs without words' based on selected pericopes from the New Testament.

The piano for the concert is provided by KAWAI.

Muzyka nieśmiertelna w Filharmonii OpolskiejMedia patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

On the 1st of March, 2024 at 7.00 p.m. the Opole Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra will perform directed by the young conductor and composer Jakub Montewka, who served as the Philharmonic's assistant conductor in the 2022/2023 artistic season. The solo part in Karol Szymanowski's Violin Concerto No. 1 will be performed by a recognised Polish violinist Jakub Jakowicz, who plays the instrument made by the Gand Brothers (Paris, 1859).

Szymanowski's Violin Concerto No. 1 opened a new chapter in the history of instrumental concerts. It differs from the great Romantic compositions in virtually everything: the form of the work is one-piece, but composed of five links, and the performing virtuosity is presented in a completely new approach.
