NFM 10 4 24Media patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

Organ recital by Piotr Rojek - head of the Department of Organ, Harpsichord and Early Music at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music - will take place at the National Forum of Music on the 10th of April, 2024 at 7.30 p.m. His interpretation will include works by a little-known composer of Polish origin, Felix Borowski, as well as Johann Sebastian Bach and Jehan Alain, and the recital will end with the artist's own improvisations based on Easter songs.

Felix Borowski's Organ Sonata No. 1 was published in 1904. Borowski dedicated it to Alexander Guilmant - organist and composer representing the older generation of artists. Borowski is considered an English-American artist, although he had Polish roots. He lived in Chicago most of his life, where he served as the distinguished principal of the Chicago Musical College for almost three decades. In 1925, however, he abandoned this job to devote himself fully to composing.

Yaroslav Shemet, an outstanding Polish-Ukrainian conductor, currently serves as the artistic director of the Silesian Philharmonic and music director of the Baltic Opera. The programme of his concert with the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic on the 5th of April, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. includes works by three composers: the symphonic poem Zjednoczenie by Borys Latoszyński, Violin Concerto No. 2 in D major, KV 211 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Symphony No. 2 in B-flat major by Karol Szymanowski. The legendary violinist Krzysztof Jakowicz will perform with the orchestra.

Szymanowski's Second Symphony, written between 1909 and 1910, is one of the most interesting works representing the first phase of the composer's work, when he was still influenced by the music of Richard Strauss and Max Reger. The premiere took place in 1911 in Warsaw, and the symphony soon appeared in Vienna, Leipzig, Munich and Cracow, where it was received enthusiastically. Although it is composed of two parts, they contain the traditional four part symphonic sections.
