Katowice | New Music Orchestra and Alicja Molitorys

OMNThe principal flautist of the New Music Orchestra, Alicja Molitorys, will perform as a soloist during a concert at the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall in Katowice on 14 March 2021 at 6.00 p.m. The programme will include Polish and Slovak music.

The New Music Orchestra under the baton of Szymon Bywalec will present Zofia Dowgiałło's Voice for orchestra, electroacoustic layer and light, Joseph Kolkovich's Arboretum III for chamber orchestra, and Ryszard Osada's Flute Concerto.

The latter piece, according to the composer, "morphologically refers to phenomena based on fractals, which structurally arrange the course of the composition on many levels. In the sonic sense, fractal phenomena are complemented by the microtonality that permeates the whole work, and the 'disorganisation' of the material through frequent improvisations. The entire composition is based on a clearly outlined 3-part form with a cadence following attaca after part II". The work was co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme operated by the Institute of Music and Dance.

Warsaw | Per archi: Mendelssohn – Haydn – Bacewicz

POKAfter a long break, the Polish Royal Opera invites you on 13 March 2021 at 7.00 p.m. for a musical meeting in the historic interiors of the Royal Castle. The concert will be broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the Polish Royal Opera.

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) – "the prodigy of the Romantic era" – showed remarkable musical talent from an early age. From the Symphony in B minor No. 10, composed in 1823, only one movement has survived to this day and, judging by the architecture of the other symphonies from that period, was originally supplemented with additional passages. Its compact structure and formal perfection allow it to successfully function as an autonomous piece. It was clearly inspired by the works of the masters of the Classicism era, but we can also already hear the lyricism and dramaturgy of the development of form characteristic of Mendelssohn’s style.

The piece will be followed by Joseph Haydn’s (1732-1809) Violin Concerto in C major, which also carries reminiscences of a bygone era, such as melodic figuration and other techniques characteristic of the Italian style prevalent in Europe at that time, the sources of which lie in the Baroque era. On the other hand, the three-part form of the composition beginning with the sonata-allegro is typical for classicism.

The programme ends with the thrilling Concerto for string orchestra from 1948 by the outstanding Polish composer and violinist – Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969). The piece premiered at the convention of the Polish Composers’ Union in 1950 and was highly recognised by the public, as evidenced by the enthusiastic statement of Stefan Kisielewski: "It can be said with a clear conscience that the honour of Polish composers was this time saved by a 'broad' – Grażyna Bacewicz. Her Concerto for String Orchestra, written with impetus and energy, full of fluid invention and great instrumentation ideas, finally awakened us from lethargy […] ”.

"Resounds: New Polish Music": Transcending the matter

SVUnusual experiments with matter – not only that of sound – will be one of the main themes of the March concert of Sinfonia Varsovia in the series "Resounds. New Polish Music".The concert will be live streamed on 13 March 2021 at 8.00 p.m. on Sinfonia Varsovia’s YouTube channel and Facebook. The programme includes premieres of works by Teoniki Rożynek and Edward Sielicki as well as pieces by Sofia Gubaidulina and Włodzimierz Kotoński. Sinfonia Varsovia will perform under the direction of the Russian conductor Mikhail Agrest.

The concert will begin with the premiere of Teoniki Rożynek's Nox (2016) for string ensemble and brass stands. The composer is known for her experimental research in electronic music. In her latest piece, Rożynek uses a permanent element of the concert landscape that usually does not attract attention. The sound of the orchestra is enriched by the sound of the brass instruments stands vibrating harmoniously with the bows.

The second premiere of the March "Resounds" is Edward Sielicki's Symphony Concertante No. 3 (2020), which was created as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme carried out by the Institute of Music and Dance. The composer, drawing upon the tradition of the concertante symphony (an intermediate genre between the symphony and the concerto), offers a new perspective on the relationship between solo and orchestral parts. The solo group includes flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, and percussion. The extended percussion is the connective tissue between the above-mentioned instruments and the strings, piano, and harp.

A pre-concert meeting with Teoniki Rożynek, Edward Sielicki and Adam Suprynowicz (music journalist), hosted by Agata Kwiecińska, will start at 7:00 p.m.
