Roman Berger has passed away...

BergerComposer, pianist and theoretician of music Roman Berger, honorary member of the Polish Composers' Union, died on 22 December 2020 in Bratislava.

From 1949 he studied theory with Jan Gawlas and piano with Marta Gabryś-Furmanik at the State Higher School of Music in Katowice. In 1952 Stalinist repression forced him to move to Bratislava with his family. He continued his education at the Vysoka Škola Muzickich Umeni, where he studied piano with Frico Kafenda, and, after the latter's death, with Štefan Németh-Šamorinski (degree in 1956), as well as composition with Dezider Kardoš (honours degree in 1965).

From 1956 he worked as a piano professor at the Conservatory in Bratislava. He also started lecturing at his alma mater: in 1965-71 he taught classes in modern music, introduction to composition and electronic music at the Department of Theory. In 1980-91 he worked at the Art History Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. From 1989 he was a member of the team preparing a new conception of artistic education at the Ministry of Education as well as a member of an Advisory Body to the Minister of Culture (until March 1991).

He was also involved in the activity of the Union of Slovak Composers, of which he was secretary from 1966. Expelled from the Union in 1968 for his participation in the "Prague Spring", he regained his membership only in 1977, but twelve years later - in 1989 - he resigned it himself. With Mark Kopelent and Alois Piňos, he reactivated the Czechoslovak Section of the ISCM/SIMC. He has also been associated with the Czech section of the Club of Rome and with the "Atelier" group.

Roman Berger has written several hundred theoretical works, philosophical essays and other publications. He has received a number of prizes for his compositions. In 1988 the Vienna University honored him with the J.G. v. Herder Prize for all his achievements in composition and theory. In 1999, the General Assembly of the Polish Composers' Union granted Berger an honorary membership.

Let us honor his memory!

Online premiere of "Sombres Lumières" by Piotr Moss

FKAn online premiere of the double concerto for cello, piano and orchestra Sombres Lumières by Piotr Moss will take place on 20 December 2020 at 2.15 p.m. on the Kalisz Philharmonic website, Facebook and YouTube channel during a concert entitled "From the splendor of Vienna to the lights of Paris".

The piece was commissioned by the Kalisz Philharmonic as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme carried out by the Institute of Music and Dance. As the composer himself points out, "Jan Kalinowski and Marek Szlezer, who have been playing the cello / piano duo for years, have asked me to write this concerto. Known under the name Cracow Duo, they performed my chamber works many times and finally the time has come for 'something bigger', for a composition with orchestra. [...] The very title of the piece, Sombres lumières (Dark Lights), says a lot about this music. There are a lot of gloomy instrumental colours, darkness, mystery, anxiety... The form of the concerto is a result of contrasting short musical sections, very different in character. The music is very expressive, saturated. Although it is an instrumental concerto and the soloists have a lot to play here, the part of the orchestra is not only an ordinary accompaniment, the orchestra is a full partner of the duo. It is worth paying attention to the omnipresent percussion part, which gives the piece a special instrumental colour. The harp part is also quite extensive".

The programme of the upcoming concert will also include Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C major to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth.

Premiere of Marcin Masecki's Symphony No. 2

MaseckiCapella Cracoviensis invites you to the premiere of the Symphony No. 2 "Candy" by Marcin Masecki, dedicated to the performers on their 50th anniversary. The concert will be streamed online on 20 December 2020 at 6:00 pm.

Capella Cracoviensis (CC) chamber choir and orchestra was established in 1970 on the initiative of Jerzy Katlewicz, Director of Krakow Philharmonic at that time, who appointed Stanisław Gałoński to create an ensemble specialising in period music performance. Over the years, Capella Cracoviensis became an independent entity performing various repertoire ranging from Medieval music to world premieres of contemporary pieces. Since November 2008, Jan Tomasz Adamus has been CC’s General and Artistic Director. CC has been hosted at many important festivals and concerts halls. In May 2018 CC began the six-year project Haydn: complete symphonies 2018-2023 including concerts and live recordings.

The premiere of Masecki's symphony will take place at the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków and will be available live on the Play Kraków platform. Capella Cracoviensis will also perform Joseph Haydn's Symphonies in D major No. 53 and G major No. 54.

Michał Moc's "st(R)uctre" – first online public performance

MocThe premiere of Michał Moc's st(R)ucture will be held on 20 December 2020 at 11.00 a.m. on the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra YouTube channel. The piece was commissioned by the PNRSO as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme carried out by the Institute of Music and Dance.

st(R)ucture is not intended for a traditional "listening", but primarily for auditory exploration online. As many works by Michał Moc (e.g. mYear19 performed by the musicians of the New Music Orchestra in the labyrinth of greenery around the PNRSO Concert Hall), it has a didactic character and focuses on the curiosity of the young listener. st(R)ucture is dedicated in particular to school children and adolescents. In 2020, the pandemic makes it impossible to experience the musical structures in the concert hall – "eye to eye" and "ear to ear" with musicians. The premiere of an "online piece" is something different than playing an instrument on stage. It is an entrance into the st(R)ructure (!) and the specificity of the Internet.

The work consists of four parts. In the second, third and fourth it requires the intervention of ... the listener. The musical material was strictly selected by the composer and it unveils gradually, so that eventually everyone has a chance to associate where the ideas behind the piece came from. The online presentation allows you to get to know the entire st(R)ucture in half an hour, although some will probably explore it faster and spend much more time inside. The st(r)ructure of the work is also different from the perspective of children and adolescents, and different from the perspective of adults. The st(R)ucture is therefore an unusual piece: in the following parts you can join the st(r)ucture and make the piece unique and personal.

"Classical and Contemporary" – online symphonic concert

FZThe Symphony Orchestra of the Zielona Góra Philharmonic conducted by Ryszard Zimak will present works by Mikołaj Górecki and Joseph Haydn during an online concert "Classical and contemporary" on 19 December 2020 at 7.00 p.m.

Mikołaj Górecki dedicated his Elegy for cello and string orchestra (2015) to Tomasz Strahl, who described the character of this piece as follows: "Elegy begins with a dark interlude, which is then followed by two first variations of a dramatic, virtuoso character. The cello part has been arranged perfectly: there are doublings, doubles and a virtuoso semiquaver texture. Variation number three is like a ray of sunshine: hope comes here for a while. Personally, I see an analogy to Elegy by Gabriel Fauré: a cello cantilena is fantastic, you can even say it is divine. Then, again, comes the virtuoso action turn and all falls into a dark wailing of the cello that is apparently heading towards non-existence".

During the upcoming concert, the solo part will be performed by Antoni Wrona – a scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. The young cellist has won numerous awards in competitions organised in Poland and abroad. He has performed in many famous concert halls, including the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, the Zielona Góra Philharmonic, the Royal Castle in Warsaw and the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music.
