Kompozytor Roman Czura laureatem Międzynarodowego Konkursu Kompozytorskiego im. Antoniego Dvořáka w Pradze

Kompozytor Roman Czura został laureatem II nagrody (i pierwszym laureatem z Polski w ogóle) podczas dziesiątej już edycji Międzynarodowego Konkursu Kompozytorskiego im. Antoniego Dvořáka w Pradze.

Jest to konkurs o unikatowej formule. Został powołany z inicjatywy rodziny Dvořáków: początkowo głównym organizatorem przedsięwzięcia był wnuk kompozytora, Antonín III Dvořák, teraz obowiązki po nim objął jego syn i wnukowie. W tegorocznej edycji Konkursu wzięło udział kilkadziesiąt muzyków z całego świata; wśród uczestników etapu finałowego było 24 reprezentantów z 18 krajów. Pierwszy etap polegał na standardowej wysyłce utworu> W finale znalazło się 24 uczestników podzielonych na dwie grupy: junior (do 23 lat) i senior (do 33).

Finał konkursu polegał na komponowaniu na miejscu, w Praskim Konserwatorium, dwóch utworów w ciągu pięciu dni do danych w pierwszym dniu wydarzenia tematów (w tym jedna kompozycja w formie hołdującej tradycji – fuga, kanon, passacaglia lub wariacje). Zasady są surowo przestrzegane: codziennie kontrolowany był limitu czasu, konieczną była rejestracja sprzętu, uniemożliwiano przeniesienie papierowych szkiców czy laptopów z lokum (wszystko było codziennie skrupulatnie przeliczane). Każdemu uczestnikowi przysługiwała na czas trwania konkursu własna sala z instrumentem, oficjalny papier nutowy, ołówki i inne narzędzia i możliwość wydruku.

2nd "Mazovian musical meetings without barriers"

The final concerts of the second series of "Mazovian Musical Meetings without Barriers" will take place on 5 September 2019 at 6 p.m. at the historic House of Creative Work "Reymontówka" in Chlewiska andon 8 September 2019 at 12 p.m. at the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Seroczyn.

During the concert in Chlewiska, excellent mezzo-soprano Magdalena Cornelius will perform in the company of accordionist Maciej Zimka. The repertoire will include the most beautiful songs by Fryderyk Chopin, Stanisław Moniuszko, Mieczysław Karłowicz, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky. In Seroczyn, organists Zuzanna and Maciej Bator will perform pieces for four hands and four legs by such composers as Johann Sebastian Bach, Correa de Arrauxo, Bert Matter, Hieronymus Praetorius and Franz Tunder.

The project is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund. Admission free!

Polish Musicological Yearbook

was initiated by Adolf Chybiński in 1935. Unfortunately, only two volumes were then issued (the second one in 1936). After nearly 70 years, in 2004, Musicological Section of the Polish Composers‘ Union came back to that project and published the third issue, dedicated to two founders of Polish musicology: professors Zdzisław Jachimecki and Adolf Chybiński.

The Yearbook represent the whole spectrum of Polish scholars’ activity, including proceedings of musicological conferences organised by the Polish Composers‘ Union. It contans papers in two languages: Polish and English.

Both the current volume and the past issues published since 2011 are avaialble online at the Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) licence and can be read as pdf files in "ALL ISSUES" menu.

Since 2016, thanks to efficient co-operation with Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne — PWM Edition — the main and prestigious music publisher in Poland, apart from the internet version the Yearbook has gain its printed version too.

Poznań | Concert of Graduates of the Vocal and Acting Department of the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań

A concert of graduates of the Vocal and Acting Department of the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań will be held on 6 September 2019 at 7 p.m. in Aula Nova.

Katarzyna Wietrzna – soprano (from the vocal class of Prof. Iwona Kowalkowska), Dominika Dobrolińska – soprano (from the vocal class of Prof. Barbara Mądra-Bednarek) and Natalia Pyzhianova – alto (from the vocal class of Prof. Marek Moździerz) will perform together with the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra. A concert of students with a professional orchestra is the first moment in their artistic careers when the instrumentalists, conductors and composers have a chance to work with a large orchestral group. For many years, Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music cooperates in this project with Tadeusz Szeligowski Poznań Philharmonic, and the effect of this cooperation is the September concert with students of symphony conducting: Łukasz Ksobiraj (the class of dr Przemysław Neumann) and Marta Kaca (the class of dr José Maria Florêncio).

The musicians will perform arias and duets from the operas of W. A. Mozart, G. Puccini, G. Verdi, G. Rossini, J. Offenbach, F. Cilei, as well as The Fairy Tale concert overture by Stanisław Moniuszko and the Romeo and Juliet fantasy-ouverture by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. In addition, the concert programme will include the premiere of Perun's Lament for symphony orchestra by Mateusz Matyska, a graduate student from the composition class of Prof. Monika Kędziora.

12 minutes for Moniuszko – results of the first stage of the competition

Polish Composers' Union and Grand Theatre – Polish National Opera as the Organizers of Stanisław Moniuszko International Composers' Competition for a micro opera 12 minutes for Moniuszko, announce the results of the first stage of the Competition.

Jan Kulma has passed away

Jan Kuma (b. 1922) – outstanding theater and television director, musician, philosopher and writer; Home Army soldier, participant in the Warsaw Uprising; husband of the poet Joanna Kulmowa, co-founder of the Warsaw Chamber Opera – has passed away on 30 August 2019.

During the Warsaw Uprising, Jan Kulma belonged to the platoon 125 of the second company of Captain Tadeusz Bartoszek "Cegielski". He took part in the battles for the Botanical Garden and the Gestapo building at Szucha Avenue. After the war, he studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University In Krakow. He was the artistic director at the national board of the Puppet Theatres (in the Board of Theatres, Operas and Philharmonics). He and his wife hosted many representatives of the artistic community at their house in Strumiany, and during the martial law they sheltered the "renovation team" – a group of oppositionists in hiding. Jan Kulma cooperated with Solidarity leaders (from Szczecin and other cities). He earned a living by working in churches as an organist, children's choir conductor and head of the vocal and theater group, who regularly performed also in the Vatican, at the invitation of John Paul II.

After 1989 Jan Kulma moved to Warsaw. As a director, he cooperated with theatres in various cities in Poland. He directed over 20 theater and opera plays, including Lucifer's Palace by Karol Kurpiński (Stanisław Moniuszko Opera in Poznań), Karmaniola or from Sas to Las by Stanisław Moniuszko, Charlatan by Karol Kurpiński and In medio vero omnium residet by Jerzy Maksymiuk (Warsaw Chamber Opera).

Warszawa | X Szalone Dni Muzyki: „Kartki z podróży” dla najmłodszych

Czy legendę da się opowiedzieć dźwiękami? Czy można wybrać się w podróż, pozostając w miejscu? Jak brzmi tradycyjna muzyka indyjska? Odpowiedzi na te i inne pytania ukryte są w programie X „Szalonych Dni Muzyki”, które odbędą się w Warszawie w dniach 27–29 września 2019 roku. W dźwiękową podróż dookoła świata zaproszeni są zarówno najmłodsi (0–5), jak i nieco starsi słuchacze (6+) oraz całe rodziny.

Od podróży po arabskich pustyniach, przez wizytę w Indiach, aż po Europę – koncerty dla dzieci i całych rodzin to wyjątkowa okazja do zabawy i spotkania z fascynującym światem muzyki klasycznej. Szkolny koncert „Na ścieżkach dźwięków”, przeznaczony dla uczniów klas III–VI będzie spotkaniem z muzyką filmową Michała Lorenca (koncert nr 5). Zespół Des Orient zaprezentuje najbardziej znane motywy ze ścieżek dźwiękowych, które posłużą do odbycia podróży w świat fantazji.

Symfoniczną propozycją dla całych rodzin będzie sobotni koncert „W cztery strony świata”. Muzycy Sinfonii Varsovii pod batutą Mikhaila Gertsa wykonają cztery utwory. Kierunek wschodni wskaże utwór Aleksandra Borodina, zachodni Edwarda Elgara. Reprezentantem północy będzie poemat symfoniczny Jeana Sibeliusa, a południa dzieło Emmanuela Chabriera (koncert nr 13). Z kolei w niedzielę Sinfonia Varsovia pod dyrekcją Aleksandra Markowića zabierze słuchaczy w podróż do krajów arabskich. Zabrzmi słynna Szeherezada Mikołaja Rimskiego-Korsakowa, którą wzbogacą wizualnie animacje piaskiem Kateriny Barsukovej (koncert nr 39).

Propozycją dla dzieci w wieku powyżej 6 lat i całych rodzin będą także koncerty z pogranicza muzyki kameralnej i tradycyjne: „Z wizytą w Indiach” łączące taniec i muzykę, „W tyglu kultur”, „Podróż z przesiadką” i „Kosmiczna Podróż”.

Chlewiska | Virtuosity of music for violin and piano

The third concert of the second edition of the "Mazovian musical meetings without barriers" series will take place on 1 September 2019 at 2 p.m. at the House of Creative Work "Reymontówka" in Chlewiska.

The "Czas Sztuki" Foundation runs a series of concerts of classical and jazz music entitled "Mazovian Musical Meetings without Barriers". The events take place in very small towns in the Minsk, Szydłowiec and Siedlce counties, where residents do not have access to cultural goods. They are organised in churches and community centers, which are the only places available in this area, gathering most of the local community. Diverse music programme (each concert has a different repertoire) is adapted to the mentality and needs of the target group. The offer includes works by composers from various eras, including Polish ones.

The September concert will feature violinist Maksymilian Grzesiak – graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, laureate of many international competitions, founder and concertmaster of the Melanidis chamber orchestra, and pianist Aleksandra Dallala. The repertoire will include the most beautiful virtuoso compositions for violin and piano written by Henryk Wieniawski, Karol Szymanowski, Pablo Sarasate and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Admission to the event is free. Co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund.

Warsaw | War is Hell

A special concert commemorating the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II will take place on 1st September 2019 at 6 p.m. in Warsaw's New Theater.

The concert will include the premiere of a new version of Lidia Zielińska's composition I don't like it for ensemble, electronics and choir of young amateurs (2018/2019) and the Polish premiere of Olga Neuwirth's Maudite soit la guerre – A Film War Requiem for ensemble, electronics and film projection (2014).

Both compositions on the programme complement each other in commemorating the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. The work by Lidia Zielińska includes sung and recited texts illustrating the process which leads to acts of aggression and wars – from gossip through hate speech. Olga Neuwirth, one of most outstanding composers of today, wrote her Maudite soit la guerre as music to the 1914 anti-war silent film of the same name by Alfred Machin (English title: War is Hell).

Performers: Chain Ensemble, Andrzej Bauer – conductor, Lidia Zielińska and Mateusz Ryczek – electronic sound projection, young amateurs prepared by Sławomir Wojciechowski and musicians from the ensemble.
