By preparing the 14th International Conference in the series ‘Traditions of Silesian Musical Culture’, which is part of the ‘Wrocław 2016 European Capital of Culture’ event, the organisers wish to present Silesia and the city of Wrocław as a modern region whose inhabitants consciously refer to its rich and culturally diverse (Polish, Czech, German) past. The people of this region cultivate tradition, which is a living force that shapes the present and the future. The conference principles coincide with the idea of the ‘Wrocław 2016 European Capital of Culture’ project, that is the concept of intercultural dialogue. The aim of this scholarly initiative is to cultivate the rich diversity of musical culture in Silesia, which is an important part of Europe, and to strengthen the cultural bonds within the European continent. The project is addressed to music historians, theoreticians and ethnomusicologists whose research work concentrates on the issues related to Silesia and to Wrocław in particular, as well as to all the people who hold the Silesian musical culture close to their hearts.

During this year’s edition of the conference we wish to concentrate on the issue of tradition, emphasised in the title of the event. We would like to explore musical culture of Silesia from the perspective of the relationship between the current cultural situation and the past, which, as a matter of fact, lies at the heart of the concept of tradition. At the same time we wish to emphasise the multicultural diversity of Silesian music, which is the result of the complicated geopolitical and social situation of the region.

The programme of thise three-day conference consists of scientific sessions accompanied by meetings, concerts and exhibitions.
