Jerzy Stankiewicz,
musicologist; b. 4th June 1944 in Vilnius. In the years 1962–68 he studied musicology with Michał Bristiger, Michał Józef Chomiński, Hieronim Feicht, Zofia Lissa and Marian Sobieski, and art history at the University of Warsaw. In 1969–70 he studied musicology with Luigi Rognoni and Paolo Emilio Carapezza and art history with Maria Grazia Paolini at the Università degli Studi in Palermo. In 1970 he received a scholarship from the University of Bologna, under which he completed an internship and studied art and mosaic iconography in Ravenna. In 1971–74 he continued his studies under the direction of Elżbieta Dziebowska at the Department of History and Theory of Music of the Jagiellonian University, which he completed with honours with a master's thesis: ‘Réveil des Oiseaux’ by Olivier Messiaen. In 1977 he became a scholarship holder of the French Government and did an internship with Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire, and in 1989–91 at the Center Acanthe in Avignon (dir. Claude Samuel). In 1990–2007 he received numerous scholarships from the "Pro Helvetia" Foundation for conducting research in Switzerland and Ukraine. In 1974–89 he worked at the PWM Edition as a technical editor. At the same time, in 1979-89 he worked as an editorial assistant of "Res Facta" and an editor of "Biblioteka Res Facta" and "Pagine". In 1978–81 and 1991–98 he hosted his own series of programmes on Polish Radio Channels 2 and 3 (Works by Olivier Messiaen, Master interpretations of works by Olivier Messiaen, Another World by Olivier Messiaen, 700 years of Swiss music), Radio Mariackie in Kraków (Mirror Music) soul) and Radio Kraków (Music of Krakow composers). He has vigorously promoted Polish contemporary music abroad by organising concerts and giving lectures in Europe and the United States, at such universities as Florida International University in Miami, University Saint-Joseph of Beirut, University of Zurich, Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, Volyn University in Lutsk, Music Academies in Lviv, Kiev and Mińsk as well as at the Polish Institutes in Paris and Bratislava, Polish Embassies in Moscow and Prague, and many other intitutions in Bern, Pezinok, Znojmo, Chisinau, Vitebsk, Rivne, Ostrog, Ternopil, Vinnitsa, Drohobych, Kolomyia, Uzhgorod, Kirovograd, Światogorsk (near Donetsk). He presented papers and announcements at seminars, conferences and international congresses, including in Birmingham, La Grave, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Görlitz, Oberammergau and Beijing. For years Jerzy Stankiewicz has been an active member of the Polish Composers' Union (PCU). He has been collaborating with composers’ unions in Slovakia (since 1994), Ukraine (since 1995), Belarus (since 1997), and Moldova (since 1998). He aimed at promoting Polish contemporary music in neighboring countries, for which he received the Polish Composer’s Union Honorary Award in 2004. In 1994 he was elected the president of the PCU’s Kraków Section, in the years 1995–99 he was the vice-president of the Main Board. In 1994, he organised a new edition of the Days of Music by Kraków Composers, transforming them into an international festival of contemporary music, of which he was the artistic director until 2014. In addition, he organized in Kraków the Frank Martin Festival (1991), Canadian music festival (1996), two festivals of Olivier Messiaen’s music (1989, 2002), and interdisciplinary conference Message of Messiaen’s ‘Quartet for the End of Time’ (2002). He has been the initiator and artistic director (since 2004) of five editions of the “Stravinsky and Ukraine” Contemporary Music Festival in Uściług and Łutsk, organised in collaboration with the Volyn Philharmonic. Since 1991 he has been a member of the Société Frank Martin in Geneva. In 1995–98 he was a member of the Kraków Voivode’s Culture Council. Since 1996 he has been a member of the Art Scholarships Commission of the Mayor of Kraków, and since 2003 an honorary member of the Mixed Marian Choir Association in Kraków. In 2001 he was awarded the Gustaw Mahler Medal for collaboration with the Choral Art Festival Jihlava and for the promotion of Polish choral music in the Czech Republic. In 2006 he received the Golden Badge of the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music for the promotion of contemporary music. In 2008 he was awarded the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture “Gloria Artis” by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, and on 28 April 2009 he was awarded an honorary doctorate of the Mykola Lysenko Lviv National Music Academy. Many composers dedicated Jerzy Stankiewicz their works, including Roman Berger, Zbigniew Bujarski, Aleksander Gabryś, Ryszard Gabryś, Halina Gareława, Krzysztof Kostrzewa, Oleksandr Kozarenko, Juliusz Łuciuk, Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar, Eugeniusz Popławski, Katarzyna Stępniewska, Paweł Sydor, Igor Szczerbakow.
