International Conference in Musicology Early Music - Context and Ideas. 2 - Krakow, 11-14 September 2008

| 31.01.2007

The Institute of Musicology of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków (Cracow, Poland) is going to organize an international conference in musicology entitled: Early Music: Contexts and Ideas. It is the second edition of the conference; the first one took place in September 2003. This time the Scholarly Committee consists of the staff of our University: prof. Alicja Jarzębska, prof. Zofia Fabiańska, prof. Piotr Poźniak, prof. Zygmunt M. Szweykowski, dr. Wojciech Marchwica.

The main aim of our conference is to discuss the problems concerning early music, specified below. We cordially invite musicologists specialized in early music (i.e. up to the mid 19th century) to participate in our meeting, which will take place presumably between 11th and 14th September (Thursday-Sunday) 2008.

Following the example set in the first conference, the primary idea of our conference is NOT to present the papers during the sessions but rather to exchange the opinions and to discuss over the papers and articles, previously published both on the Internet and in the form of a conference book.

We propose five broad topics stimulating the discussion over various aspects of early music:
  • Historical Theory and the Role of Cultural Memory (chairperson: Reinhard Strohm (Oxford), co-chairperson: Anne Marie Busse Berger (Univ. of Cali-fornia, Davis)

  • Patronage and Music ca 1400-ca 1700. Italy versus Northern Europe (chair-person: Ryszard Wieczorek (Poznań)

  • Context and Meaning in 17th-Century Sacred Music (chairperson: Robert Kendrick (Chicago), co-chairperson: Jeffrey Kurtzman (St. Louis)

  • The Dramma per Musica on the Way. Forgotten Keys of the 19th-Century Opera (chairperson: Helen Geyer (Weimar-Jena)

  • Reception of Italian Musical Culture in Central Europe up to ca 1800 (chair-person: Zofia Fabiańska (Kraków), co-chairperson: Aleksandra Patalas (Kra-ków)

Each topic would then be discussed during one round-table session run by a chairperson. The chairperson and co-chairperson, in agreement with the organizers, will evaluate the proposals of papers sent to us and select the future participants.

All accepted papers will be available on the official web-site of the conference and will be published before the conference in the Conference Book. During the conference only the central theses of each paper will be delivered (maximum four minutes per each). We expect papers (in Ms Word or rtf format) no longer than 3000 words or 21000 characters (including footnotes and bibliography). Articles can also include, in addition, musical examples, illustrations and tables. Although the language of the conference will be English, we also accept papers in Italian, German and French.

Conference Calendarium:
  • The deadline for the first call applications (just topics of papers) - 31st of January 2007
  • The deadline for participants (except the chairpersons and co-chairpersons) for submitting the main theses of their papers - 15th of September 2007
  • The deadline for the evaluation process of the submitted proposals, confirming the lists of the participants in each round-table session and advertising them in the Internet - 30th December 2007
  • The deadline for submitting the full texts of the papers by all participants - 31st of March 2008
  • The deadline for the conference fee payment - 1st August 2008
  • The deadline for printing the Conference Book - 1st September 2008
The conference fee is 50 Euro plus ca 400-700 Euro for accommodation and meals; we do not refund the travel costs.
