Materials from the "Warsaw Autumn" Festival available in the new POLMIC Digital Archive

WJMKiDN600 archival photographs and 70 fragments of recordings from the "Warsaw Autumn" International Festival of Contemporary Music have been made available on the new POLMIC Digital Archive portal as part of the "Warsaw Autumn Available!" project.

In recent years, Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC has been archiving, digitizing and sharing recordings and photographs related to the "Warsaw Autumn" International Festival of Contemporary Music – the largest international Polish festival of contemporary music and one of the most important events of this type in Europe and around the world. Unique photographs and sound recordings documenting the festival in over 60 years of its existence are a true national heritage, reflecting the history of Polish musical culture in the second half of the 20th century, immortalizing its creators and presenting their most important works. The aim of our activities is to protect archival materials from inevitable degradation and to make them available to the general public.

For the purpose of presenting our digitized collections, POLMIC Digital Archive – the first digital archive devoted to Polish contemporary music was created in 2020. As part of last year's project, we shared online almost 700 records: photographs documenting festival concerts and accompanying events as captured by Andrzej Glanda – a photographer cooperating with "Warsaw Autumn" in the 1980s, as well as fragments of audio recordings from festival concerts in 1962 and 1963. Our digital collections will continue to grow as more materials are digitized.

The project was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund.

Two Regameys – father and son – on the album from the "Polish Music Today" series

RegamejThe last album released in 2020 by the Polish Composers' Union as part of the "Polish Music Today – Portraits of Contemporary Polish Composers" series is completely unique. Due to the special relationship and fate of both characters, the publisher made an exception and decided to devote the album to two composers instead of one. In addition to works by the "Polish-Swiss composer" Konstanty Regamey, the CD includes pieces by his father, Konstanty Kazimierz  – an almost completely unknown composer, who worked mainly in distant Ukraine, and in 1938 was sentenced to death by the Soviet regime.

The originator of the project and the author of the essay for the album is Jerzy Stankiewicz, who has devoted many years to researching the life and work of both Regamey (as well as popularizing the discovered works and contexts).

He invited two renowned artists to participate in the project – sisters Olga Pasiecznik (soprano) and Natalia Pasiecznik (piano). They performed a repertoire of songs and romances as well as piano pieces by the Regameys. The recording was made in the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of the Polish Radio in August 2020 by Ewa Guziołek.

The booklet contains essays written by musicologist Jerzy Stankiewicz and literary scholar Anna Bednarczyk (in Polish and English), as well as song lyrics in the original languages (Polish and Russian) and their translations into Polish and English prepared by Anna Bednarczyk and Marta Kaźmierczak.

Co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund as part of the "Musical Trace" programme operated by the Institute of Music and Dance. The album was released thanks to the support of the ZAiKS Authors' Association. The project partner was Repliq Media Sp. z o.o. Co-producer of the recording and CD edition is Programme 2 of the Polish Radio.

The Polish Composers' Union own releases are intended solely for promotional, educational and research purposes. They are not intended for sale. They are provided free of charge to interested institutions and individuals, but due to the very small circulation and large interest, priority is given to music libraries, where a broad audience can benefit from each set. Application for the 2nd Competition of Polish Music is now open

IMiTThe second edition of the Stanisław Moniuszko International Competition of Polish Music will take place at the Artur Malawski Podkarpacka Philharmonic Hall in Rzeszów between 11 and 18 September 2021. From now until 14 May 2021, the candidates will be able to submit their applications by filling in online forms available on the dedicated website: polishmusiccompetition.pl. The competition is organised by the Institute of Music and Dance. The prizes are funded by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

– For the second edition of the competition we are awaiting numerous applications from both Poland and abroad. Now everything is in the hands of the musicians, it is their own decision to make. There is no better time than now to start working on the individual competition programmes. We also hope that the professors from educational music establishments will play a crucial role of encouraging their own students to take part in the event – says Katarzyna Meissner, director of the Institute of Music and Dance.

Worth mentioning is the fact that there are no age or citizenship restrictions for the candidates. During the competition, the musicians will present works selected from amongst those written by 56 Polish composers mostly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The participants create a programme that they will perform in the successive stages of the competition. Alongside such famous composers as Chopin, Paderewski, Górecki or Penderecki, we will also find less well-known representatives of different styles and musical eras, such as Antoni Kątski, Eugeniusz Pankiewicz and Stefan Kisielewski. Equally important are Polish female composers represented by Maria Szymanowska and Grażyna Bacewicz. The competition will be chronicled in a series of recordings in electronic and CD formats distributed worldwide. In such a way, several works that have never been released before will finally have their world premiere recordings.

The participants of the Second Stanisław Moniuszko International Competition of Polish Music will contest for the total prize money in the amount of over eighty thousand euros to be won in two categories: piano and chamber ensembles. The juries of both categories will feature distinguished musicians and musical personalities from Poland and abroad. The applications can be submitted via an online system on 14 May 2021 at the latest. The performers will also be given an opportunity to win a number of special prizes: from financial rewards to a chance of appearing at leading Polish concert halls and selected festivals. Amongst the awards will be a 500 euro prize for the best performance of a piano sonata or a chamber composition written by Miłosz Magin, which has been funded by the composer’s daughter Margot Magin. Also the Société Frédéric Chopin Genève award will be given in the form of a recital performance during the Chopin Festival in Geneva in 2021. Collaborating with the competition, the Polish Institutes (Instytuty Polskie) will also award selected winners recital performances in the cities where they are located, such as Bratislava, Saint Petersburg and Vienna.

Lodz Philharmonic: Carnival Organ Recital

FLThe organ is usually associated with religious, serious and dignified music. The "Carnival Organ Recital", which will be held at the Arthur Rubinstein Lodz Philharmonic on 31 January 2021 at 4.55 p.m., will prove that it does not always have to be the case.

The concert will be performed by Krzysztof Lukas, winner of international organ competitions in Germany, France, Italy and Russia. The organist has played concerts in most European countries, North Africa and Asia. He is associated with the Academy of Music in Katowice.

Krzysztof Lukas will present musical pieces related to the carnival, among others, thanks to their dance character, such as La Fiesta by Ch. Corea or La Valse des Anges by J. Bret. There will be both original compositions for organs and transcriptions. The Finale of Louis Vierne's Organ Symphony No. 6, considered one of the most difficult pieces for this instrument deserves special attention. Organ symphonies were created by many composers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, wanting to show the tonal possibilities of this instrument, making it almost similar to an orchestra. They imitate the color and texture of orchestral sound. Krzysztof Lukas will also perform Marian Sawa's Fuga Bolero and Konstanty Gorski's Fantasy in F minor.

The online broadcast of the concert will be available on YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N44h4khrk5k

Artur Zagajewski's "EUR post cold wave new synth romantic punk" – online premiere

EURThe world premiere of Artur Zagajewski's EUR post cold wave new synth romantic punk took place in Warsaw's Cukry Studio at the beginning of September 2020 The online premiere of this piece will be held on 30 January 2021 at 9.00 p.m. as part of the Hashtag Ensemble residence at the "Codes" Festival of Tradition and Avant-garde Music.

"Since I have already had the opportunity to write music to be performed in a specific urban space, where sounds are closely related to the surroundings, this time I decided to act differently than usual. I decided to confront the premiere venue (the ruined but atmospheric cellar of the Warsaw "Cukry") with a completely different aesthetic – the modernist EUR district of Rome, where order, clean and simple form and smooth architecture reign. Moreover, I imagined Hashtag Ensemble as a post-punk (new romantic) group, therefore, while working on the piece, I found additional sources of musical inspiration – Ultravox, The Cure, Siekiera, and... Sigur Rós.” This is what Artur Zagajewski wrote about his piece, created as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme operated by the Institute of Music and Dance.

What might be the sound of the post cold wave new synth romantic punk, inspired by the EUR distric of Rome? You will be able to find out during the concert broadcast, which will be available at: https://youtu.be/A2-RCeVRj2M

Sinfonia Iuventus online: Mykietyn, Elgar and de Falla

POSIThe Jerzy Semkow  Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra invites you to an online concert broadcast from the New Art Hause – Palace in Radziejowice on 30 January 2021 at 8.00 p.m. The ensemble conducted by Monika Wolińska will perform Paweł Mykietyn's Double Concerto for two flutes and orchestra, Edward Elgar's Sospiri and Manuel de Falla's Suite from the ballet El amor brujo.

A pair of excellent flute players, ranked among the greatest contemporary virtuosos of this instrument, Agata Kielar-Długosz and Łukasz Długosz, will perform Paweł Mykietyn’s Double Concerto, which premiered (in their performance) in 2016. The artists themselves wrote about this work as follows: “It consists of three attacca movements, the first and third of which are based on the composer’s continuous accelerando technique. The innovative approach to the agogic sphere of the work is extremely interesting. The solo parts – in close symbiosis with the orchestra part – are treated very originally. Paweł Mykietyn’s concert will certainly significantly enrich contemporary flute literature. It is wonderful!”

In one of his radio programmes, composer and publicist Roman Palester expressed the following opinion about De Falla’s fascinating ballet El Amor Brujo: “It is probably the most direct and the most captivating piece he wrote. In the piece, De Falla was able to project the entire «canto jondo», which is the primeval, extremely expressive way of folk singing originating from Andalusia, […] full of sharp and nervous rhythm, with melodics inspired by an eternal tradition and expression reflecting gloomy, magic dancing rituals from the one hand, and fresh Andalusian nights on the other.” Harp is a solo instrument frequently paired with string orchestra, and this is the set of instruments chosen by Edward Elgar, great English Neo-Romanticist, who in 1914 composed its Sospiri (Sighs), a piece he initially wanted to compose for violin and piano as a pendant to the popular Salut d’amour. The piece finally took the form of a subtle orchestral adagio characterised by peaceful and thoughtful mood.
