86th Musica Moderna in Łódź
A commemorative concert in memory of Professor Jerzy Bauer, the sound of Łódź filtered through artificial intelligence, performances by outstanding ensembles, world premieres by acclaimed artists, and presentations of the newest works by emerging composers—these are just some of the highlights of the 86th Musica Moderna. The Academy of Music in Łódź and the Polish Composers’ Union invite audiences to concerts dedicated to new and the newest music from 24 to 28 November 2025. Admission to all events is free.
The autumn edition of Moderna will open with a concert honoring the memory of Professor Jerzy Bauer (24.11), an eminent composer, music theorist, conductor, and long-time pedagogue of the Academy of Music in Łódź. Less than a year after his passing, members of the Academy’s faculty—including several of his former students—will perform selected works from his rich creative output. The program will feature chamber pieces and vocal lyricism, culminating in the Concertino for guitar and string orchestra.
The Young Composers’ Concert (25.11), a permanent element of the festival, will shed light on the current artistic interests of the youngest generation of composers. This event is devoted entirely to works by students of the Academy of Music in Łódź.
The following events would not be complete without guest performers specializing in contemporary music. During Wednesday’s concert (26.11), the ensemble Flow Unit will present their perspective on works by Mateusz Ryczek, Ryszard Lubieniecki, Wojciech Błażejczyk, and Artur Zagajewski.
What sounds form the sonic portrait of Łódź? And what happens to this portrait when placed in the hands of artificial intelligence? These questions will be addressed by composer and Academy alumnus Wojciech Glądys together with accordionist and current student Marcin Konopka, who will present their intriguing project “The Music of Łódź Through the Eyes of Artificial Intelligence” (27.11).
The festival will conclude with a powerful finale: a concert by one of Poland’s most dynamic ensembles performing new music. The acclaimed Kraków-based Spółdzielnia Muzyczna will present a program featuring works by Polish composers—including pieces by Teonika Rożynek and Artur Zagajewski, as well as two world premieres: Digital Environments by Piotr Peszat and Djentle//Bruthall by Paweł Hendrich (28.11).
An accompanying event will be the installation Figures by Artur Zagajewski, presented in the foyer of the Museum of Art in Łódź, Ogrodowa 19 (12.12). The composition Figures was commissioned by the Art Of Music Foundation and co-funded by the City of Łódź as part of the “Łódź Full of Culture 2025” program.
The organizers of Musica Moderna are the Composition Department of the Academy of Music in Łódź and the Polish Composers’ Union.
The festival is co-funded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund as part of the “Composers’ Commissions” program, implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance. Paweł Hendrich’s work was realized with support from the City of Wrocław Scholarship.
