A Meeting at Stawisko with Beata Bolesławska-Lewandowska - author of Zygmunt Mycielski’s biography

Information about the event | Stawisko | 25 April 2026

A meeting dedicated to the latest book by Beata Bolesławska-Lewandowska, Zygmunt Mycielski: Between Music and Politics, published by PWM Edition, will take place on April 25, 2026 at 12.00 pm at the Anna and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz Museum in Stawisko. Copies of the book with the author's autograph will be available at the event. Admission is free!

This is a meticulously drawn portrait of a composer, intellectual, and witness to turbulent history. Written with scholarly precision yet without academic detachment, this monumental monograph will satisfy the curiosity both of music lovers and researchers of the 20th-century music. The author does not focus on detailed analyses of Mycielski’s compositional language; however, the music is treated superficially. Instead, she views his oeuvre as a "reflection of his interests as a whole," inseparably linking his creative work with his life story. She frequently gives the composer a voice, drawing on his numerous writings, notes, and letters.

Zygmunt Mycielski — composer, writer, music critic, and social activist, a figure who has left a lasting mark on the history of Polish culture. He was born in an aristocratic family renowned for its artistic patronage, involvement in science and the arts, and its patriotic and social contributions. As the author of diaries and numerous journalistic pieces, he left behind a testament to independent thought in times of ideological pressure and political oppression.

Beata Bolesławska-Lewandowska — musicologist and Professor at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. She is the curator of Zygmunt Mycielski’s legacy and for years has been writing about the 20th- and 21st-century Polish music, with her work published both in Poland and abroad. She is the author of biographies of Andrzej Panufnik and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, as well as volumes of conversations about composers Górecki, Panufnik, and Mycielski (published by PWM Edition). She is the co-editor of the "Polish Music Abroad" publishing series. Between 2015 and 2025, she served as the Chair of the Musicologists’ Section, and since 2025, she has been the President of the Polish Composers’ Union.

The meeting will be hosted by Maciej Koszewski. Following the discussion, copies of the book will be available for purchase thanks to representatives from PWM Edition.
