During the last concert of the year by the Silesian Quartet as part of the "British Fantasy" cycle, on December 21, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the NOSPR, the artists will present the works of Sir Andrzej Panufnik on the 110th anniversary of birth of the only Polish composer to be awarded a knightly title by Queen Elizabeth II.
"Music is an expression of emotions and feelings. My ideal is a composition in which poetic content merges with the perfection of musical craftsmanship. Poetry alone does not determine the musical value of a piece, just as craftsmanship alone risks falling into dead, dry formulas. Timeless beauty is born only from the balance of both these elements", wrote Andrzej Panufnik in 1952. The timeless beauty of music will be heard in Panufnik's String Quartet No. 3 "Wycinanki". The program will also feature a work by his daughter, Two Homelands for string quartet, commissioned in 2007 for the Festival of Premieres.
The program will be complemented by works by British composers: Phantasy op. 2 by Benjamin Britten and String Quintet in D major by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Roxanna Panufnik.
