"Choir—Masterfully!": Bach, Brahms, Górecki, Ślęczek

Information about the event | Katowice | 12 October 2025

Just a few days before Pope’s Day, on 12 October 2025 at 5:00 PM, the Silesian Philharmonic Choir under the direction of Jarosław Wolanin will invite us to a musical reflection on faith, spirituality, and tradition.

The evening will open with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Ich lasse dich nicht, du segnest mich denn. It will be followed by a remarkable reinterpretation of Bach’s music by Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt – Komm, süßer Tod. In this piece, multi-voice repetition and layers of sound drifting through time create the impression of music suspended beyond time. Next on the program will be the Motets, Op. 29 by Johannes Brahms.

A particularly symbolic moment of the evening will be marked by The Source from the Roman Triptych by Piotr Ślęczek – a piece that the Silesian Philharmonic Choir premiered in 2009, during the celebration of Pope’s Day. Inspired by the writings of John Paul II, the work will return in the October concert, uniting history, spirituality, and remembrance.

The culmination of the program will be Totus Tuus, Op. 60 by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki – a composition written in 1987 to welcome Pope John Paul II. In December 2024, it was performed during the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, and in Katowice, it will serve as the final chord of an evening filled with deeply spiritual music.

Following the concert, as part of the "Philharmonic Connects" series, Magdalena Śliwińska will take us into the world of painting and share how music and the visual arts intertwine and inspire one another.
