Gdańsk | 'St. John's A-New' – premiere of Agnieszka Stulgińska's piece

On 19 September 2020 at 6.00 p.m. in the St. John's Centre in Gdańsk local and international musicians will perform a specially commissioned work by Agnieszka Stulgińska, a well-known Polish composer of the young generation. Polichromie Świętojańskie [Midsummer Polichromes] for organ, chamber orchestra and singing band will be premiered in the 'St. John's A-New' concert series, organised by the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre.

The work combines the aesthetics of contemporary music with the historical dimension, present both in the subject of the piece (Old Polish songs on the life of St. John) and music (traditional group of singers). We associate the term "polychromes" primarily with multi-colored decorative paintings, used for architectural decorations, made not only on stone materials and plaster, but also on wood, indoors and outdoors, in sacred and secular buildings. Can a contemporary artist create "sound polychromes" in a sacred building, following the example of old artists performing frescoes in temples for God's glory? Such an attempt was made by the composer Agnieszka Stulgińska in the piece Polichromie Świętojańskie, dedicated to the St. John Church in Gdańsk.

The piece will be premiered by the ensemble of historical wind instruments, organist Andrzej Szadejko, percussionist Łukasz Maciejewski, chamber orchestra composed of members of the NeoQuartet and BalticAlians ensembles conducted by Rafał Janiak, as well as Adam Strug and the Monodia Polska singing band.
