The Department of Music Theory of the Faculty of Composition, Music Theory and Sound Engineering at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz is organizing an International Conference titled “Music in a World of Values and Meaning”, to be held on the university’s new campus (Bydgoszcz, 1 Prof. Jerzy Godziszewski Street) on 9–10 December 2025. The conference proceedings will be streamed on the Academy’s YouTube channel.
The inaugural lecture, Humanities Today: Autonomous or Public, will be delivered by Prof. Ryszard Nycz, “Cultural objects, which are part of cultural tradition, […] ‘not only exist, but also signify.’” This idea, formulated by the eminent Polish theorist and historian of literature and culture Ryszard Nycz, may serve as a motto of the conference, during which music will be examined through the lens of the values and meanings embedded in musical works. Equally important will be a perspective that views music as something creative and agentive in cultural practices, formative— as Martha Nussbaum urged—“for the humanity of today’s and tomorrow’s human being.”
The conference programme will feature numerous papers devoted to contemporary Polish music, including works of Zygmunt Mycielski, Paweł Mykietyn, Hanna Kulenty, Mikołaj Piotr Górecki, and Paweł Szymański.
