"Józef Koffler – Lviv and European Composer": portal presentation and world premiere!

We invite you to the presentation of the new website of the Polish Composers' Union dedicated to the life and works of Józef Koffler (1896–1943?). The event will take place on March 29, 2025, at 6:00 PM at the University of Warsaw in the Prof. Jan Baszkiewicz Hall of the Auditorium Building of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies (Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28). At the end of the presentation, the Silesian Quartet will perform the string quartet composed by Koffler in 1934, which was previously considered lost! Admission is free.

Józef Koffler is an exceptional and multifaceted figure. His life intersected with the dramatic upheavals of Central European history in the first half of the 20th century. As a composer, Koffler paved the way for modern musical trends in interwar Poland, creating works that were presented on prestigious European stages – from The Hague and Amsterdam to Oxford and London. However, his activities extended far beyond composition – he was a respected educator, an insightful music journalist, and an intellectual actively engaged in debates on contemporary culture.

The portal presentation will be conducted by its authors: Prof. Iwona Lindstedt, Director of the Institute of Musicology at the University of Warsaw, and Dr. Michał Piekarski, member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of History of Science at the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Organizers: The Scientific Library of the Polish Composers' Union, the Section of Musicologists of the Polish Composers' Union, and the University Library in Warsaw.

The event partner is the Polish Music Publishing House.

The project titled “Józef Koffler – Lviv and European Composer” was funded by the state budget, granted by the Minister of Education and Science as part of the "Social Responsibility of Science II" program.
