Katowice | Michele Marelli – new sound of clarinet

OMN

The premiere of the works by Krzysztof Wołek and Marcin Bortnowski, written as part of the "Music" and "Composing Commissions" programmes of the Institute of Music and Dance, will take place on 15 March 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall in Katowice.

Open/Close concerto for clarinet and chamber ochestra by Krzysztof Wołek, which shows the infinite possibilities of bass and double bass clarinets, and In ictu oculi for orchestra by Marcin Bortnowski, dedicated to the memory of Andrzej Chłopecki, were commissioned by the New Music Orchestra under the direction of Szymon Bywalec.

The finale of the concert will include the Art of Metal I series by Yann Robin written especially for the double bass metal clarinet, for the clarinetist of the famous Ensemble intercontemporain, Alain Billard. This attractive work, however, quickly found itself in the repertoire of other performers, including the versatile clarinetist, basset horn player and mime actor Michele Mareli, who will perform as a soloist during the March concert. According to the composer himself, the cycle is supposed to be a sound for what metal is associated with: "strength, power, massiveness, energy, shine and gloss."
