Krzysztof Wołek has been named a recipient of the 100th edition of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship!

Krzysztof Wołek, a native of Bytom and currently Professor of Composition and Director of Electronic Music Studies at the University of Louisville, has been awarded a prestigious fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He is among 198 distinguished individuals from the fields of contemporary science and art, representing 53 disciplines, selected from nearly 3,500 applicants.

As part of the fellowship, Wołek will create a composition titled _Bonds and Unions_ for chamber orchestra, electronics, and video. As the composer explains, “The central aim of the piece is to explore the complex relationships between physical labor, craftsmanship, and collective solidarity.” The concept behind _Bonds and Unions_ emphasizes thepolitical and social significance of labor unions, with a musical language inspired by Luigi Nono, Louis Andriessen, and Phill Niblock.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of this esteemed fellowship, which has had a profound impact on American intellectual and cultural life. The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, established and originally funded by U.S. Senator Simon Guggenheim, is dedicated to “fostering the development of scholars and artists by helping them engage in research or creative work in any field of knowledge or art, under the freest possible conditions.”

Since its inception, the Guggenheim Foundation has awarded more than $400 million in fellowships to over 19,000 individuals, including more than 120 Nobel Prize laureates.
