Łódź | Krzysztof Penderecki's Farewell

The Łódź Philharmonic will pay tribute to Krzysztof Penderecki with a concert inaugurating the next artistic season. On 18 September 2020 the Symphony No. 8 "Lieder der Vergänglichkeit" ("Song of Transience") for 3 solo voices, choir and orchestra will be performed for the first time in Łódź under the baton of the institution's Artistic Director Paweł Przytocki.

On 29 March the entire music world mourned the news of the death of Krzysztof Penderecki, one of the greatest composers of the present day, an outstanding figure of Polish cultural life. Poles lost not only a great artist, ambassador of Polish culture in the world, but also a great humanist, who touched the most difficult problems of the modern world in his works.

Musicians of the Łódź Philharmonic regularly performed the Master's works, which was appreciated by the composer. It is worth to mention Te Deum, Dies Irae or Polish Requiem. In the autumn of last year, the Łódź Philharmonic joined the celebration of Krzysztof Penderecki's 85th birthday and presented many of his works, including Credo, which was performed after 15 years from its Łódź premiere.

The Łódź premiere of Penderecki's Symphony No. 8 "Lieder der Vergänglichkeit" will be performed by: Izabela Matuła (soprano), Ewa Wolak (contralto), Liudas Mikalauskas (baritone) as well as the Symphony Orchestra and Choir of the Łódź Philharmonic. In this poetic work, the composer, through reflection on the relationship between man and nature, tackles the topic of transience as an inseparable component of a human being.
