Masters of Polish Music

FSzThe beginning of the most beautiful month of the year will bring three days filled with the best Polish music performed by the artists of the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin. The concert on 3 May 2021 at 7.00 p.m. will feature pieces by Aleksander Tansman, Witold Lutosławski and Grażyna Bacewicz, and will be available for free on the Szczecin Philharmonic's Facebook and YouTube.

Witold Lutosławski, Grażyna Bacewicz, and Aleksander Tansman are among the greatest composers of the 20th century. Their fame, achievements, awards, and international recognition should be reflected in strong, powerful and dignified music. And yet, each one of them wrote light pieces for string orchestra. Although each in their own way.

As noted by music critic Stefan Kisielewski: "Lutosławski is a great jeweler and engraver – a cold but reliable master. (...) Little suite by this author is a masterpiece of folkloric stylization, enjoying well-deserved recognition and popularity". Kisielewski also reviewed Bacewicz's Concerto for String Orchestra: "It can be said in all honesty that the honour of Polish composers was saved this time by a woman, Grażyna Bacewicz. (...) We finally got a ‘red-blooded piece’ of wholesome and delicious music written with a creative power that is truly virile". Tansman's Divertimento escaped the sharp pen of Kisielewski, but the composer himself said that for him "the avant-garde becomes interesting only when we grow out of it".
