Message for International Music Day 2025

What a blessing it is that God gave us music!

Music is a remarkable language of communication between people. The sender — the artist — clothes their often very specific thoughts and imaginings in sound, while the listener reads from those same sounds a completely different message. Yet in this multitude of meanings, there is no contradiction or misunderstanding.

In the world of sound, we operate with a symbolic, subjective code that is, to a great extent, universal — it is understood by people of different cultures and languages. On the other hand, each of us interprets this code through our own unique decoding machine — our sensitivity. That’s why we all understand music, though each in a different way.

The longer I work with music, the more fascinated I am by its nature. Much has already been written about its extraordinary power, and more books are surely just a matter of time. Here, I would like to mention just one face of this immeasurable force. In turbulent times, when deeply polarized views within society form the backdrop to an increasingly unstable international situation, music has the extraordinary ability to awaken in us a capacity for empathy. Even if behind the same harmonies, rhythms, and melodies each person sees a different, tangible vision, the very process of being together in music unites us in a unique way.

At the heart of this phenomenon lies, I believe, faith in music — a faith that we experience and a childlike trust that allows us to surrender to it. We open ourselves to the influence of the world of sound and allow it to enter our emotions — into our most personal space! In that trust, we are all together, as if taking part in an unrepeatable, spiritual mystery. In this way, music becomes a tool for building bridges of mutual understanding and empathy between people.

On the occasion of International Music Day, I wish all creators and lovers of the world of sound many beautiful experiences of shared feeling. May music help us share what is most precious within us.
