On 17 January 2026, Bytom will become the venue for a unique artistic event. In the courtyard of the District Court, the Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej (Ensemble OMN) will present Piotr Tabakiernik's musical theatre production Mała – a moving work on the borderline between contemporary music and theatre.
Mała is a story inspired by the authentic writings of St. Thérèse of Lisieux and Jacques Fesch, a convict who underwent a profound conversion in his death cell. The story of two characters, separated by space and time, but united by a spiritual transformation, is narrated through words, music and the symbolic nature of the setting. The courtyard of the court – a venue marked by the concepts of justice, guilt and judgement – becomes an integral part of the narrative.
The performance features actors (Bartosz Mazur and Małgorzata Mikołajczak), accompanied by a soprano (Łucja Szablewska), a trombone (Mateusz Konopka), instrumentalists from the Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej (Ensemble OMN) and choir members from the Camerata Silesia ensemble, conducted by Szymon Bywalec.
Piotr Tabakiernik's music is minimalist and repetitive, based on detailed microtones and extended performance techniques, creating an intensive, meditative atmosphere.
The world premiere of Mała took place in 2023 at the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, and its follow-up performance at the Rozbark Theatre in Bytom was very well received by the audience.
The performance is part of the Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej long-term initiative to present ambitious artistic projects in unusual urban spaces and to build a dialogue between contemporary art and the history and identity of the city.
The spectacle’s return to Bytom is possible thanks to funds from the “KPO dla Cultury” - Next Generation UE fund for Poland.
