Piotr Moss' Jubilee in the Podlasie Philharmonic

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Piotr Moss's birth and the 55th anniversary of his artistic career, his Concerto malinconico for tenor saxophone and orchestra (2021) will be performed for the first time at the Opera and Philharmonic in Białystok on February 7, 2025, at 7:00 PM.

The work was created as part of the "Composers’ Commissions" program, and the composer himself writes about its origins: "…The saxophone has been within my compositional interests for many years, and the list of pieces I’ve written for this instrument is already quite long. The poetic interpretations of Ellington played by Piotr Baron directed my compositional thinking towards a certain melancholy, which I believe the tenor saxophone and Piotr Baron are excellent representatives of. It should also be noted that by commissioning a saxophone concerto from a classical music composer, Piotr Baron may have wanted to return to his musical roots. On the other hand, I was curious to see how my music would sound through the lens of the jazz experiences of this wonderful musician. The work is a single movement, consisting of several distinct episodes separated by interludes, which allow room for saxophone improvisation."

The piece will be performed by the Orchestra of the Opera and Philharmonic in Białystok and saxophonist Paweł Gusnar, conducted by Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk. The concert will also feature the Choir of the Opera and Philharmonic in Białystok and the Highlander Folk Ensemble of Jan Karpiel-Bułecka, who will present the concert version of the ballet Harnasie, Op. 55 by Karol Szymanowski.
