Premiere of Elżbieta Sikora’s Opera "Dorian Gray" in Poznań

Information about the event | Poznań | 23 November 2025

The key event in the November repertoire of the Stanisław Moniuszko Grand Theatre will be the premiere of Elżbieta Sikora’s opera Dorian Gray, staged by David Pountney and conducted by Maestro Jacek Kaspszyk. The premiere will take place on 23 November 2025 at 7:00 p.m.

The work was created by Elżbieta Sikora, a Polish composer who has lived in France for over four decades. Dorian Gray marks the first collaboration between the composer and the Grand Theatre in Poznań. The title role will be performed by Rafał Żurek.

David Pountney transposes the action of the libretto from late-19th-century England to the present day. In his staging, Dorian’s portrait becomes a photograph. We enter a virtual world in which social media are flooded daily with thousands of images—unrealistically beautiful, heavily retouched, distorted by filters. The director shows how fabricated visuals manipulate emotions and deceive the senses. Creation over truth, fiction versus reality, online likes in place of genuine relationships.

The opera Dorian Gray was composed especially for the Grand Theatre in Poznań as part of the “Composers’ Commissions” program carried out by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
