The premiere of the musical performance Mahagonny – Ein Songspiel. Afterparty, directed by Krystian Lada with music by Katarzyna Głowicka, will take place on December 8, 2024, at 7:00 PM at Studio Theatre in Warsaw.
The performance consists of two parts:
The show explores the development of European metropolises and the lives of people driven by the desire to fulfill their dreams in the major cities of Europe during the 1930s and in the 21st century, specifically in Berlin and Warsaw.
Brecht and Weill created the songspiel genre, a form of musical theater meant to be more accessible than traditional opera, highlighting singing as a way to express the deepest and most hidden emotional states. Their inspiration came from the music of Berlin's cabarets.
The second part of the performance, Afterparty, reflects contemporary life in Warsaw, offering a kind of a rollercoaster experience that encapsulates the dynamics of modern urban life.
Main roles will be performed by: Ewa Błaszczyk, Dominik Bobryk, Filip Karaś, Michał Dembiński, Albert Memeti, Jacek Ornafa, Tomasz Nosinski, Natalia Rybicka, Ramona Rey, Marta Zięba.
The Mahagonny City Orchestra will be conducted by Lilianna Krych.
Natural fabric dyeing workshop, focused on developing eco-friendly skills, will be accompanying the premiere.
The performance is co-financed by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc., New York, NY. The performance of Mahagonny. Ein Songspiel is presented by permission and using materials from Universal Edition A.G. The performance of Afterparty is presented with materials from the Polish Music Publishing House.
