With deep sorrow we received the news about the death of Professor Mieczysław Tomaszewski. He died on January 14, 2019 in Krakow, at the age of 97.
A member of the Polish Composers' Union since 1962, in 1997 honored with the highest distinction: Honorary Membership. He was a character in the Polish musical life, completely unique, individual, and at the same time exemplary. Many musicologists and music theoreticians modeled themselves on Him. It was difficult to meet His standards, although His work was the inspiration for several generations of musicologists.
He was a musicologist, but traditional musicology was too narrow for him. He would be well defined as a "poet of musicology", because of his output is musicological poetry, or poetic musicology. He dragged into the depths of music, just like a poet drags deep into the word. He left, and with him goes the entire era, but his texts remain and will always draw us into music.
Funeral ceremonies will take place on January 21 in Kraków. The funeral mass will be held at 11.00 a.m. at the University Collegiate Church of St. Anne and the burial ceremony will start at 1.00 p.m. at the Rakowicki Cemetery.
