Konstanty Andrzej Kulka will perform Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 8 by Mieczysław Karłowicz on February 17, 2017 at the Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz.
Karłowicz wrote his Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 8 at the age of 26 (1902) having violinist Stanisław Barcewicz in mind (to whom the work is dedicated). It was premiered by the addressee of the dedication and Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester under the baton of the composer himself on March 21, 1903 at the Beethoven Saal in Berlin. Despite the fact that the composition was intended for a phenomenal virtuoso, it does not dazzle the listener with excessively overloaded effects, with the exception of the initial measures of the first movement.
The programme of the concert includes also two works by Claude Debussy - La Mer and Afternoon of a Faun, in the latter of which the solo part will be performed by flutist Daniel Rybicki. The soloists will be accompanied by the Pomeranian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra under the direction of German conductor Raoul Grüneis.
