The Metropolitan Opera - live in HD: “Rusalka” by Antonín Dvořák
Antonín Dvořák’s opera Rusalka will be broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera on February 25, 2017 at 35 cinemas across Poland.
Dvořák’s ninth opera is one of the most successful Czech operas. First performed in Prague on March 31, 1901, it became an enormous success in the composer’s native country and soon gained recognition also abroad. The Czech libretto was written by the poet Jaroslav Kvapil based on the fairy tales of Karel Jaromír Erben and Božena Němcová. Rusalka (i.e. a watersprite from Slavic mythology, usually inhabiting a lake or river) is in many ways an example of late Romanticism, containing folklore, evocations of the natural and the supernatural worlds, and a poignant interpretation of the idea of love and death. The plot contains elements which also appear in The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen and Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué.
The Metropolitan Opera’s 2016-17 season, the 50th anniversary of its home at Lincoln Center, features 225 opera performances of 26 operas in a varied repertory that ranges from 18th century masterpieces to one of the most acclaimed operas in recent years. The Met: Live in HD series, which transmits Met performances to more than 2,000 movie theaters in 70 countries around the world, continues for its 11th season and includes the broadcast of 10 performances from the season.
