Warsaw | Bomsori Kim and Sinfonia Varsovia. The Orchestra’s 34th Birthday

sv

The Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra celebrates its 34th birthday. On this occasion the ensemble would like to invite everyone to a gala birthday concert on 15 April 2018 at the Polish National Opera, which will feature the works of Nowowiejski, Tchaikovsky and Penderecki. The Orchestra will be conducted by maestro Grzegorz Nowak, with excellent young violinist Bomsori Kim as soloist.

In April of 1984 the legendary American violinist Yehudi Menuhin came to Poland to play a series of concerts. To match the exigencies of the planned repertoire, the Polish Chamber Orchestra increased the number of its members, inviting renowned musicians from all over Poland. Thus, Sinfonia Varsovia was born and Yehudi Menuhin, delighted with the ensemble’s prowess, happily took on the post of its first guest conductor. To celebrate the 34th anniversary of those events, Sinfonia Varsovia would like to invite everyone to attend a gala birthday concert at Teatr Wielki – the National Opera. The conductor’s podium will be occupied by Maestro Grzegorz Nowak, who has had the opportunity to work with Sinfonia Varsovia many times, and their album recorded together with Martha Argerich received the Fryderyk award in the year 2000.

The evening will begin with the Overture to Feliks Nowowiejski’s opera Legenda Bałtyku (The Legend of the Baltic). In the course of the recently celebrated Nowowiejski Year, Sinfonia Varsovia has contributed significantly to promote the music of the composer of the song Rota (Oath). The ensemble has recorded the composer’s complete ballet music and performed his monumental oratorio The Finding of the Holy Cross. The special guest of Sinfonia Varsovia’s birthday concert will be 2nd place winner and winner of nine special prizes at the 15th Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition, South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim, considered to be one of the greatest stars of the young generation. On the stage of Teatr Wielki – the National Opera she will perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major.

The programme of Sinfonia Varsovia’s birthday concert would not be complete without a work written by the Orchestra’s artistic director Krzysztof Penderecki. The ensemble will perform the composer’s Symphony No. 4 “Adagio”, commissioned by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to commemorate the 200th anniversary of adopting the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. American critic William Mootz said that “the work acknowledges the past, while moving triumphantly towards the future”. These words take on a special meaning on the anniversary of the ensemble’s formation, when thanks to a magnificent past, the Orchestra is now about to build its new home, the largest concert hall in Poland.
