Warsaw | "Composing Commissions": Hashtag Ensemble will premiere Artur Zagajewski's piece
Hashtag Ensemble and the 'Sphere of Harmony' Foundation invite you on 1 September 2020 at 6.00 p.m. to the backyard at 34 Stalowa Street in the Old Praga to participate in a unique concert. Six members of Hashtag Ensemble will attempt to add sound to the old tenement house and interpret the city space with carefully programmed works by Andriessen, Walshe, Riley and Zagajewski.
The concert will open with the iconic piece Workers Union by Louis Andriessen. Like employees of pre-war Praga factories, the Hashtag Ensemble's musicians will form a labor union and play utopian music of unity. Old Praga is a district strongly associated with the broadly understood alternative and with many subcultures that have been writing their slogans on the walls of local tenement houses for decades. We will hear a piece about the skater subculture And Jump from the Golden Gate Bridge by Jenifer Walshe. Searching for traces linking music and urban space, following the reminiscences of the Barwich & Jung's Prague metal foundry, Hashtag Ensemble will also play the mesmerizing Tread on a Trail by Terry Riley.
The concert will end with the premiere of Artur Zagajewski's EUR, a piece designed especially for the backyard space at 34 Stalowa Street. EUR was created as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme carried out by the Institute of Music and Dance. It draws from post-rock and syth-pop, it can be perceived as an imaginary music flowing from the windows of Prague backyards in the 90s of the last century.
Admission to the concert is free. Remember to put on your mask and keep a distance of 2 meters to other concert participants.
