Warsaw | Excerpts of Krzysztof Penderecki's 'Fedra' opera - premiere

FN 17.2.23

Music of Krzysztof Penderecki and César Franck will be conducted by Jurek Dybał and performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic ensembles on the 17th of February, 2023 at 19.30 and on the 18th of February at 18.00. For the first time we will hear excerpts from Penderecki's unfinished opera Phaedra, collected by Jurek Dybał, intended for choir and orchestra.

The composer began working on Phaedra with text by Jean-Baptiste Racine, but did not complete the work. The piece was written with Ewa Podleś in mind as the lead actress. The Vienna Staatsoper postponed the premiere twice – from 2015 to the 2018/2019 season, eventually terminating the contract at the composer's request.

Jurek Dybał also adapted a suite from the last opera completed by the composer - Ubu Rex, which we will hear during the February concert.

César Franck's symphonic poem Psyché, inspired by the myth of Eros and Psyche, will be performed in the second part of the concert.
