On the 31st July, 2022 at 6.00 p.m. at the Umschlagplatz Monument in Warsaw (Stawki 4 street), the premiere of a piece by the curator of the WarszeMuzik Festival and the co-founder of the Mieczysław Wajnberg Institute, Ania Karpowicz, will take place. It will be a soundtrack for the monument. Admission to the event is free.
On the 31st of July, 2022, in the year of the 80th anniversary of the final destruction of the Warsaw ghetto, the monument will play its own music, far from klezmer folklore and mourning songs, music ‘here and now’. The musical form was inspired by a poem by Irena Klepfisz entitled Umschlagplatz from 1983, published in Polish in the anthology Moja Dzika Koza translated by Bella Szwarcman-Czarnota.
In terms of sound, the starting point for writing the piece were field recordings made at the monument, as well as the sound impressions heard and remembered from the interventions of WarszeMuzik. From the content of the poem, we will hear only a few selected words in the piece, including the title one: ‘I am thinking. I am not crying’. The piece is written for flute and bass flute accompanied by an audio layer, composed only of processed sounds of the city recorded at the monument.
