Warsaw Philharmonic: Premiere of André Tchaikowsky's "Concerto classico "

The world premiere of André Tchaikowsky's Concerto classico for violin and orchestra will take place on 5 February 2021 at 7.30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Warsaw Philharmonic. Outstanding Russian violinist Ilya Gringolts will perform the solo part. The Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andrzej Boreyko will also present Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3 and Gesualdo da Venosa's Six madrigals arranged for orchestra by Stanisław Skrowaczewski.

In recent decades, the oeuvre of André Tchaikowsky has been slowly gaining the recognition it truly deserves. Born in 1935 in Warsaw, he first made his name as an outstanding pianist – he won prizes in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1955 and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels a year later; from 1956 until his death in 1982 he lived in England. His output includes, inter alia, a symphony, two piano and two violin concertos, flute concerto, numerous works for solo piano, several chamber pieces, songs and the opera The Merchant of Venice. Many of Tchaikowsky’s pieces still remain unpublished. In today’s concert, we will hear the premiere of his Concerto Classico for violin and orchestra, which he composed in the years 1962–64.

Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, was one of the most outstanding composers of the end of the Renaissance. His main interest as a composer was the madrigal – the leading genre of lay a cappella music during the Cinquecento period. In 1992, six of Gesualdo’s madrigals were orchestrated by Stanisław Skrowaczewski, a renowned composer and one of Poland’s greatest conductors. Brahms completed his Symphony No. 3 in F Major in the summer of 1883. The first movement, Allegro con brio, begins with a threenote motif F-A-flat-F, which recurs many times during the course of the piece. This is the musical symbol of Brahm’s life motto “Frei, aber froh” (“free but happy”).
