The Music Education Department of the Katowice City of Gardens institution is once again implementing a project promoting Polish contemporary music as part of the "Composer Commissions" program. On December 9, 2024, at 7:00 PM, the Sextant by Krzysztof Herdzin will be premiered at the Concert Hall of the Academy of Music in Katowice. The piece is written for wind quintet and piano. Admission is free!
Sextant is inspired by the works of the French group Les Six, who declared their dislike for pathos, advocated for creating music that was simple, sparkling with humor, or even kitschy. As the organizers emphasize, "Krzysztof Herdzin’s versatile musical personality, who, in addition to composing classical music and songs performed by Polish pop stars, arranges film music, performs worldwide as a soloist, chamber musician, jazz pianist, conductor, and music producer, perfectly embodies these ideas."
The piece will be performed for the first time by pianist Beata Bilińska and the Kraków Wind Quintet.
Additionally, the concert will feature works by Aleksander Tansman, Krzesimir Dębski, and the famous Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin, arranged for chamber ensemble and piano. The piano solo part will be performed by acclaimed jazz pianist Filip Wojciechowski.
The concert will be repeated on December 10, and the latest work will also be presented in Cracow at the Florianka Hall of the Academy of Music.
The project is co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund as part of the "Composer Commissions" program, implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
