Wroclaw | Requiem. Tribute to Krzysztof Penderecki

March 2022 saw the second anniversary of Krzysztof Penderecki’s death. Known as a classic of the avant-garde, this outstanding composer went down in history as an outstanding conductor and teacher. The concert on the 8th of April 2022 at 7 p.m., during which the musicians will perform works by Maurice Ravel, Valentin Silvestrov and Maurice Duruflé, will be a tribute to the author of St Luke Passion.

Maurice Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin is in fact a suite intended as a homage to the works of the great French harpsichordist François Couperin. Its original version was created in 1917, on the wave of renewed interest in the 17th-century harpsichord literature and was intended for piano. Two years later, Ravel, known for his genius instrumentations, composed a version for orchestra. Each of its movements is dedicated to the Ravel’s friends who died during World War I

We will also hear the Symphony No. 7 by Valentin Silvestrov – the famous Ukrainian composer of contemporary music, born in Kiev in 1937. Over the years, his interests have focused on avant-garde trends, including dodecaphony and aleatorism, of which he became a significant representative, starting in the 1960s.

The concert will end with the sounds of the monumental Requiem op. 9 by French composer and organist Maurice Duruflé. To this day, this work is considered a masterpiece of the genre and is often compared to the famous Requiem in D minor op. 48 by Gabriel Fauré.
