"Meetings at the Composers'": presentation of the project "The Soul of Sounds"

Meeting with the protagonists of the project "The Soul of Sounds" and its author, Dr. Marietta Morawska-Büngeler, will take place on September 27, 2024, at 5:00 PM at the Polish Composers’ Union headquarters in Warsaw. Thanks to the support of the Polish Composers' Union and the Polish Music Information Center POLMIC, the book “The Soul of Sounds: Conversations with Polish Composers” was published on the website www.duszadzwiekow.polmic.pl. Admission to the event is free!

The book, which spans over 1,000 pages, contains in-depth interviews with fifteen composers who hold an important place on the Polish music scene, along with documentation of their works, photographs, excerpts of scores, and manuscripts. A unique feature of Marietta Morawska-Büngeler's work is the "self-portrait" nature of this group of composers. The materials were collected by the author from the 1990s until 2011, but due to circumstances beyond her control, the book was only published this year.

Marietta Morawska presents a large group of composers of a similar age: Rafał Augustyn, Krzysztof Baculewski, Marek Chołoniewski, Szabolcs Esztényi, Eugeniusz Knapik, Krzysztof Knittel, Jerzy Kornowicz, Stanisław Krupowicz, Andrzej Krzanowski, Hanna Kulenty, Aleksander Lasoń, Piotr Moss, Elżbieta Sikora, Tadeusz Wielecki, and Lidia Zielińska. Marietta Morawska's long and close relationship with these interviewees enriches the overall portrayal of their generation with many important details.

The "Soul of Sounds" project, including the free availability of the book published without the assistance of a commercial publisher, and the complementary activities of the "Musica et Ars Moderna" Foundation to promote contemporary Polish music, is a broadly understood pro bono initiative for Polish society.

With the support of the Polish Composers' Union and the Polish Music Information Center (POLMIC), the book The Soul of Sounds: Conversations with Polish Composers has been published on the website https://duszadzwiekow.polmic.pl/.

The Polish Composers' Union / Polish Music Information Center (POLMIC) expresses its gratitude to Marietta Morawska-Büngeler for generously donating her book, which she prepared at her own expense in the form of a website, to be published on our online portal. We appreciate the author’s years of work on the book and its publication, as well as her personal financial contribution to conducting research, interviewing composers, and covering publishing and promotional efforts. We also join in thanking all the sponsors, patrons, and benefactors of the publication, as well as everyone else who contributed, whether in a larger or smaller but always significant way, to the creation of this important book for Polish culture.

The project Dusza dźwięków (The Soul of Sounds) was supported by the composers featured in the book, photographers who donated their images without a fee, music publishers who offered musical examples, as well as sponsors, patrons, consultants, and many institutions and individuals from Poland and abroad, whose support enabled the book to be published in such a rich and comprehensive form.

We invite you to the presentation of the website https://duszadzwiekow.polmic.pl/

and to a meeting as part of the 67th International Festival of Contemporary Music "Warsaw Autumn" and the "Meetings with Composers" series!
