Zygmunt Mycielski – composer, writer, music critic, and social activist – is a figure who left a lasting mark on the history of Polish culture. Beata Bolesławska-Lewandowska paints a precise portrait of him in her monumental monograph Zygmunt Mycielski. Between Music and Politics, recently published by Polish Music Publishers (PWM Edition). The Warsaw premiere of this book will take place as part of the 100th Anniversary Festival of the Polish Composers’ Union, on November 12, 2025, at 4:30 PM, in the historic headquarters of the Polish Composers’ Union. Admission is free.
Based on the book, in a conversation with Marek Zagańczyk, the author will speak about the composer whose personality – as she herself admits – is not easy to grasp for a biographer. The Biography of Zygmunt Mycielski is a book for all those who are passionate about music, literature, and the history of the 20th century. Alongside Mycielski, the pages of the book feature many distinguished figures from the world of culture – from Karol Szymanowski to Jerzy Giedroyc. It is a story of “family Europe” and “Europe in the family,” of great politics and everyday life in a changing world, of religion and eroticism – all subordinated to the longing for freedom, both in life and in art.
