To mark the centenary of Polish Radio, a unique composition project has been created, showcasing the richness and diversity of contemporary Polish music. As part of the initiative, ten new works, specially commissioned for the occasion from prominent Polish composers, will be presented. The project will culminate in a festive jubilee concert on 14 September 2025 at 7:00 PM at the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of Polish Radio in Warsaw.
This special project, developed by Polish Radio, reflects its ongoing mission to support and promote Polish musical culture. The initiative draws on the finest traditions of Polish public broadcasting and revives a time when numerous significant musical works were being commissioned and premiered. It is not only a tribute to the history of Polish Radio but also a clear statement of its commitment to the future of contemporary music.
As part of the project, Polish Radio’s Channel Two (Dwójka) commissioned ten new compositions from Polish composers representing different generations and diverse artistic approaches. The featured composers include: Grażyna Pstrokońska-Nawratil (b. 1947), Paweł Szymański (b. 1954), Hanna Kulenty (b. 1961), Cezary Duchnowski (b. 1971), Aleksander Kościów (b. 1974), Wojciech Błażejczyk (b. 1981), Nikolet Burzyńska (b. 1989), Monika Szpyrka (b. 1993), Paweł Malinowski (b. 1994), Lena Michajłów (b. 2002).
The concert program will feature four world premieres: works by Wojtek Błażejczyk, Hanna Kulenty, Grażyna Pstrokońska-Nawratil, and Lena Michajłów. In addition, the Double Concerto for Violin and Cello by Marta Ptaszyńska will be presented for the first time.
Each composition has been written with specific performers in mind, whose artistic diversity—both in terms of generation and aesthetics—enhances the character of the entire project. Among the featured performers are: Marcin Markowicz and the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw, Hashtag Ensemble, Kompopolex, Kwadrofonik, NeoQuartet, proMODERN, Royal String Quartet, Sinfonietta Cracovia, and Spółdzielnia Muzyczna.
The centenary celebrations of Polish Radio’s founding will continue throughout the 2025/2026 artistic season. The commissioned works will be presented during events organized by Polish Radio and selected festivals and concerts. The jubilee concert will also serve as the opening of the 80th artistic season of the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw.
The creation of Marta Ptaszyńska’s work was co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund, as part of the "Composers’ Commissions" program, administered by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
