"Women's Month" is a unique series of concerts that will take place at the Zielona Góra Philharmonic for the 4th time. In 2025, it will last from 7 to 29 March, and its motto will be 'musical fascinations'. The baton will be passed to outstanding female conductors, and the repertoire of each concert will include premieres of works by Polish female composers alongside the great symphonic literature!
Chloe Dufresne, Marta Kluczyńska, Agnieszka Franków-Żelazny and Martyna Zych were asked about the repertoire that fascinates them most, and exactly this will be presented during the concert.
This year's concert series will be inaugurated by the premiere of the symphonic Hortus urbanus by Katarzyna Kwiecień-Długosz, who describes the ambiguity of its title as follows: "although the work itself is inspired by Warsaw, 'urbanus' is also associated with Saint Urban - the patron saint of Zielona Góra. So I invite the listeners to observe the 'urban garden' written in my score".
Second premiere - already on 14 March. Agnieszka Zdrojek-Suchodolska's symphonic prelude In the Garden of Bacchus alludes to the city's wine traditions.
On 21 March, we will hear Dumka i Furiant by Ewa Fabiańska-Jelińska, who dedicated the piece to the Zielona Góra Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra for the first time. It alludes to a lyrical Ukrainian dumka and a dynamic Czech dance. As the composer emphasises, 'the process of dialogue between the selected instrumental groups of the symphony orchestra becomes important. The palette of original ways of extracting sounds from individual instruments will gradually expand as the musical narrative develops in the two expressively differentiated parts of the composition'.
The 'Women's Month' will conclude with Magdalena Cynk's latest monumental Lacrimosa for soprano, choir and symphony orchestra, composed in tribute to Krzysztof Penderecki. The composer pays tribute to Penderecki through subtle references to his style, particularly through the lamenting, flowing nature of the melody, mixing sonority with elements of tonality, deep drama and spirituality.
This year's project will also provide a space for fascinating audience meetings, discussions and interviews.
