As part of the fifth edition of the "Super Sam +1" master performances series, a concert featuring Jeff Gburek & Qba Janicki will take place on November 19, 2020, at 8:00 PM at the SPATIF club in Warsaw. The concert will be streamed online on YouTube.
The name "SuperSam," in reference to solo concerts, was coined by clarinetist Jerzy Mazzoll. The contemporary version of the project is curated by bassist, artistic event organizer, and head of the Mózg club, Sławek Janicki. The "Super" in the title signifies that the program is built around renowned artists—masters. "Sam" (which means "alone" in Polish) refers, of course, to a solo performance but also to creative solitude. The "+1" in the title indicates that each evening concludes with a duet performance. The artists meet on stage for the first time.
Jeff Gburek is a guitarist, sound artist, composer, improviser, instrument maker, and field recorder. At one point, he became a percussionist, and after studying gamelan music in Bali and Java, he built his own hybrid percussion set with oscillators and radios, creating live music for the Djalma Primordial Science dance theater project. He later shifted towards prepared guitar and live electronics. He designed piezoelectric units to extract resonance from objects and experiments with discovered sonospheres. He has participated in artistic residencies in Berlin, Lyon, Amsterdam (STEM), Darmstadt, and Brussels.
Qba Janicki, over the past 15 years, has played hundreds of concerts with artists such as Jerzy Mazzoll, Sławek Janicki, Roscoe Mitchell, Tomasz Sroczyński, Toshinori Kondo, Peter Brötzmann, Kris Wanders, and Fred Frith. He is currently involved in bands such as Malediwy, Kondensator Przepływu, and the Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet, as well as in newly formed duets with composer Teoniki Rożynek and Belgian producer Obsequies. In addition to playing instruments, he also composes theater music, collaborating with Maciej Podstawny, Paweł Łysak, Artur Pałyga, and Grzegorz Jaremko. As a co-founder of the Mózg Foundation, he helps organize cultural projects in Bydgoszcz and Warsaw.
