85. "Musica Moderna" Łódź Academy of Music
The rich program of the 85th edition of Musica Moderna traditionally includes chamber, electronic, and audiovisual concerts, as well as meetings with artists and workshops. The audience will also have the opportunity to experience the results of collaboration between students from Łódź's art schools – the Academy of Music and the Academy of Fine Arts. The festival will take place from May 5 to 17, 2025.
Many artists will participate in the 85th Musica Moderna festival. Czech composer, educator, and music journalist Ivo Medek will share his insights on the challenges faced by contemporary creators (May 5). Another opportunity to meet with composers will be the discussion panel centered around Marietta Morawska-Büngeler’s book The Soul of Sounds (May 7), featuring the artists portrayed in the publication: Rafał Augustyn, Krzysztof Baculewski, Krzysztof Knittel, Jerzy Kornowicz, Stanisław Krupowicz, and Tadeusz Wielecki.
The piano recital by Sára Medková (May 5) will demonstrate how contemporary music dialogues with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, while the marimba recital by Julianna Siedler-Smuga (May 7) will transport the audience into the world of multimedia and performance art.
A key component of every edition of Musica Moderna is the presentation of works by young composers. This year as well, student compositions will be featured in several concerts: Tuesday evening (May 6) will be dedicated to premieres of chamber works, and Thursday (May 8) will showcase pieces incorporating electronics. On the same day, the audience will also be able to explore the outcome of collaborative projects between students from the Academy of Music and the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź.
The spring edition of Moderna is also a time for presenting diploma works, summarizing the experience gained during composition studies at the Academy of Music in Łódź (May 15–17).
An accompanying event to the festival will be a multimedia performance prepared by students of the Academy of Music in Łódź and the Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts in Poznań (June 27).
The Musica Moderna Festival is organized by the Composition Department of the Academy of Music in Łódź and the Polish Composers’ Union, with partners including the OPERATIVA Association for the Promotion of Artistic Initiatives, the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, and the Municipal Cultural Zone: Widzew Wschód.
