On the eve of the birthday of Witold Lutosławski, the great Polish composer and patron of the National Forum of Music, on January 23, 2025, at 7:00 PM, the Lutosławski Quartet will perform. Their word-and-music narrative about the composer, interpreting works from various periods of his creativity, will be enriched with improvisations.
Exemplary of his innovative approach to compositional technique, boldly exploring sound possibilities while simultaneously referencing native folklore, will be Melodie ludowe (Folk Melodies) and the String Quartet. Lutosławski's Folk Melodies are in fact twelve miniatures originally intended for piano, based on sound material collected by Jerzy Olszewski from various regions of Poland. The composer reworked them in a unique way, seasoning the folk-derived sounds with atonal phrases and interesting metrorhythmic solutions.
