The tradition of Tenebrae, or nocturnal or early morning services, dates back to the Middle Ages and was celebrated in darkness, symbolizing abandonment and mourning. The chamber concerts "Miserere mei, Deus – Music for Good Friday" by the Singing Ensemble of the City of Katowice "Camerata Silesia" draw upon this tradition. On April 18, 2025, at 11:00 PM (!) at the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Katowice, the fourteenth edition of this event will take place. As in previous years, Camerata Silesia, led by Anna Szostak, will perform the famous Miserere by Gregorio Allegri and a program specially prepared for this edition of the event. Admission is free!
Good Friday is a day of deep reflection and focus, when the Church commemorates the passion and death of Christ. During this extraordinary time of nocturnal silence, the music resonates with even greater power. Camerata Silesia invites you to experience this unique event – full of emotions, spiritual concentration, and the beauty of music by Edward Elgar, Marc'Antonio Ingegneri, and Palestrina. Works by Polish composers will also be performed: *W krzyżu cierpienie* by Sabina Meck and Spraw niech płaczę from Stabat Mater by Karol Szymanowski.
The evening will end with the world premiere of the XII & XIV parts of Versus de Passione Domini Nostri Iesu Christi by Marcin Wójcik.
The soloists will include Magdalena Szostak-Krupowicz, Karolina Sambor-Kobiałka, Bogumił Stelmach, Remigiusz Nowak, and Adam Myrczek – recitations.
The concert will be part of the Passion Festival organized by the Singing Ensemble of the City of Katowice "Camerata Silesia" and the Parish of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Katowice.
