The first subscription concert of the Silesian Philharmonic in 2025 will kick off the season of carnival festivities and joy. On January 17 at 7:00 PM, the Orchestra, conducted by Yaroslav Shemet, invites the audience to dance to the rhythms of the Italian tarantella and the Spanish habanera.
A suite from Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen will transport us into the world of passionate, southern rhythms. At the start of the evening, we will hear the most famous excerpts from this work, including the seductive Habanera.
Polish music will also be presented — the one-movement Dance of the Heavenly Spheres by Adam Wesołowski, the Director of the Philharmonic, composed for the 550th anniversary of birth of Nicolaus Copernicus. One section of the work is a Renaissance dance — a tarantella — in which the composer uses relationships between pitch to depict important dates in Copernicus' life.
The evening will be crowned with musical pictures by Ottorino Respighi, a composer who adored the "Eternal City". Audience will hear Pines of Rome and Fountains of Rome.
The concert is co-organized by the National Institute of Music and Dance as part of the "Musician in Residence" program, funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
