In the second concert of the Carnival series, the Silesian Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Piotr Pławner, will take listeners on a musical journey across Europe, performing dance works in which composers drew inspiration from folk music. On January 24, 2025, at 7:00 PM, the concert will also feature melodies from Poland, with a special emphasis on the Silesian accent.
In Oberki, Grażyna Bacewicz combined traditional motifs with 20th-century compositional techniques, highlighting the vibrant rhythms characteristic of Polish folk dances. Echoes of the folk music of Podhale will be heard in Orawa by Wojciech Kilar. Both works are marked by simple yet striking structures, creating dynamic and energetic musical images.
The Silesian Chamber Orchestra will also present some of the most recognizable works by composers from Greece, the Czech Republic, England, Romania, Norway, and Armenia: 5 Greek Dances by Nikos Skalkottas, the Dance of the Comedians from Bedřich Smetana’s opera The Bartered Bride, St. Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst, Romanian Dances by Béla Bartók, Anitra’s Dance from Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite, and Sabre Dance from Aram Khachaturian's ballet Gayane.
