The closing concert of this year’s Silesian Philharmonic concert series “Chór-Mistrzowsko!” will take place on July 6, 2025, at 7:00 PM in the Christ the King Archcathedral in Katowice. The event will gather six choral ensembles who will together pay tribute to the spiritual tradition of Polish sacred music by performing works with a profound, timeless message. The concert will be dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Upper Silesian Tragedy. The choirs will be conducted by Jarosław Wolanin – conductor and artistic director of the Silesian Philharmonic Choir. Admission is free!
The evening will be filled with compositions by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, a composer whose work has become one of the most important pillars of contemporary sacred music over the years.
The concert will open with Górecki’s composition Przybądź Duchu Święty (Come, Holy Spirit), Op. 61 – a moving prayer for inspiration and the presence of the Spirit, performed by the Silesian Philharmonic Choir.
All invited choirs will perform pieces from the cycle Z pieśni kościelnych (From Church Songs): the Juliusz Roger Choir from Rud, the “Lutnia” Singing Society Choir from Strumień, the “Apertum Cor” Singing Ensemble, the Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice, and the Silesian Philharmonic Choir, creating a powerful, multi-voiced harmony.
The concert will conclude with Totus Tuus Op. 60, performed by the Silesian Philharmonic Choir – one of Górecki’s best-known sacred works, written for the welcoming of Pope John Paul II during his pilgrimage to Poland.
