The Metropolis Piano Quartet will mark the celebration of Poland’s National Holiday on May 3, 2025, with a special concert in Wałbrzych. At 6:00 PM in the Sudeten Philharmonic, the ensemble will present a program offering a unique overview of Polish repertoire written for the relatively rare piano quartet ensemble.
The concert will open with Piano Quartet in A minor, Op. 39 by Józef Deszczyński, a work performed during the 3rd International Polish Music Competition in Rzeszów, where the ensemble was a prizewinner.
This piece will be followed by Suite Divertissement by Aleksander Tansman. As musicologist Marcin Trzęsiok notes, “The Suite exemplifies neoclassicism, blending references to early music (Sarabande) with Romantic idioms (Nocturne) and an openness to the modern cityscape, with its lively cafés and bustling streets (Finale).”
The concert will conclude with Zygmunt Noskowski’s Piano Quartet, premiered in Weimar in 1879 with the participation of Franz Liszt. The dazzling fourth movement, a stylized krakowiak, imparts a distinctly national character to the piece.
The concert is part of the “Polish Music Scene” program, organized by the National Institute of Music and Dance and funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage—an initiative aimed at deepening public understanding of Poland’s rich musical heritage.
