The concert of the Dresdner Philharmonie conducted by Krzysztof Urbański at the National Forum of Music on May 9, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. will provide an opportunity to hear two symphonic masterpieces separated by a century. The concert is part of an exchange between the Dresdner Philharmonie and the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
In the first part of the evening, pianist Boris Giltburg will perform Edvard Grieg's romantic Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 46, alongside the orchestra. The program will also feature Henryk Mikołaj Górecki’s poignant Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, his most famous composition.
Górecki's Third Symphony was first performed in 1977, but it remained relatively unknown to the broader public, just like its composer, until the late 1980s. A breakthrough came in 1992 with a recording featuring Dawn Upshaw and the London Sinfonietta conducted by David Zinman. The album sold over a million copies. The raw simplicity of the work by the Upper Silesian composer gained additional significance during the political transformation in Poland.
The soloists for the evening will be: Edyta Krzemień – soprano, Anna Federowicz – soprano, and Michał Sławecki – countertenor.
