Elżbieta Penderecka passed away...

The Ludwig van Beethoven Association has announced that on October 31, 2025, Elżbieta Penderecka (1947–2025) passed away suddenly.

She was a patron of culture, the originator and organizer of many significant artistic events and festivals. For over fifty years, she worked alongside her husband, Krzysztof Penderecki — honorary member of the Polish Composers’ Union — promoting Polish music around the world and supporting the careers of young artists.

Since 1965, she managed Krzysztof Penderecki’s office and assisted him in organizing the Pablo Casals Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

She served on the supervisory boards of several foundations, including the Council of the Łańcut Castle Foundation, and co-founded the European Mozart Foundation. She contributed to the establishment of the Sinfonietta Cracovia chamber orchestra, acted as an advisor to the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation, was a board member of the Aram Khachaturian International Competition, and served on the Advisory Board of the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO).

She initiated the concert series Great Masters Concerts – Elżbieta Penderecka Invites, featuring world-renowned artists such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Jessye Norman, Simon Estes, Barbara Hendricks, Stanislav Bunin, Martha Argerich, Krystian Zimerman, Maxim Vengerov, Shlomo Mintz, Heinrich Schiff, and Julian Rachlin.

She was Chair of the Artistic Council of the Kraków 2000 – European City of Culture Festival.

Together with the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and the German Music Council, she organized the Bundesjugendorchester tour Poland and Germany – Together in the Heart of Europe, held under the honorary patronage of the Presidents of Germany, Johannes Rau, and Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, in Kraków, Warsaw, Poznań, and Gdańsk.

Since 1997, she had organized and served as General Director of the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival. In 2003, she founded the Ludwig van Beethoven Association, of which she was President. Together with her husband, she established the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music in Lusławice. In 2020, she was appointed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Prof. Piotr Gliński, as Chair of the Artistic Council of the Centre.

Elżbieta Penderecka received numerous national and international honors and awards, including the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1996), the Pro Musica Viva Award (1997), the Gold Statuette of the Business Centre Club (1998), the Honorary Badge of Merit for the Kraków Province, the 40th Anniversary Medal of the Fulbright Program in Poland (1999), the Professor Julian Aleksandrowicz Medal (2000), the Gold Medal of the City of Kraków (2000), the “Titan of Titans” Award for promoting Poland’s image abroad, the European Culture Award (2002), the Gold Cross of Merit of the Republic of Austria (2003), the Bertelsmann Award (2006), the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Lithuania (2007), the Commander’s Cross of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity (2007), the Music Ambassador Award from the Pro Musica Viva Stiftung in Mainz (2007), the Order of Bernardo O’Higgins (2008), the Honorary Distinction from the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (2008), the Crystal Mirror Award (2008), the “Golden Thought” Award for contributions to Polish science and culture (2010), the Samuel Simons Sanford Medal from Yale School of Music (2010), the Bene Merito Honorary Badge (2010), the Pro Merito Melitensi Cross with Plaque from the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (2011), the Silver Medal Gloria Artis (2011), the “Meritorious for the Jagiellonian University” Badge (2011), the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2012), the “Culture Creator” Award (2012), the Medal of the Embassy of Poland in Beijing (2014), the Gold Medal of the Ministry of Culture of Armenia (2016), the Bene Merentibus Medal from the Association of Polish Architects (2016), the Polonia Minor Medal from the Małopolska Regional Government (2016), the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Civil Merit from His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain (2019), the Gold Commemorative Medal for the 100th Anniversary of the Polish Olympic Committee (2020), the Honorary Gold Olympic Laurel (2021), the Kazimiera Bujwidowa Award (2021), the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis (2023), the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2023), the Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland (2023), and the Knight of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (2024).

She was also named Friend of Warmia and Mazury by the Marshal of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship (2013), Global Cultural Ambassador by the University School of Global and International Studies (2017), Idol of the Century by the Chance for the Blind Foundation (2018), Promoter of Poland 2020 for her contributions to Polish culture by the Teraz Polska Foundation, and Honorary Citizen of the City of Zabrze (2022).
